Reminder that these towns are the homes of the people the Russians claim to be "liberating".
The head of the russian occupation administration in Donetsk Oblast said russia won’t be restoring some Ukrainian towns they destroyed, instead turning them into some kind of entertainment for future russian generations, so “they can understand the revival of Nazism.”

I don't think it's all of it by any measure but I do absolutely believe that the political media's raging anti-intellectual streak has got worse with time and has ended up influencing the way MPs talk, and what they choose to talk/think about
I don’t think this is a “politicians have got dumber” issue for the most part. If you look at the *actual CVs* of previous cohorts of MPs, their background is not radically different when you account for, you know, the fact the economy is different! It is primarily a media and ecosystem issue.
We have got to make politics intellectual again. It is the only way that societies thrive is when politicians have the capability to actually think and reflect deeply:

Also recognize that this unambiguous use of the military to commit murder of helpless noncombatants as they fought for life is a direct reflection of the virulent white supremacy that has seized our government, where every Latino man is a gangbanger in a de facto state of war against White America

This research seems pretty relevant today (and pretty plausible too)...
But, crucially, there were diminishing returns on lower numbers. Levels of 150k or 250k did not yield better ratings than 350k.

Since ONS forecasts are around 350k even without any policy changes, ‘further and faster’ on migration seems unlikely to reap much political benefit.

I know who Nus Ghani MP is - not because we always agree - but because she’s been serving her constituency (as well as lewks) since 2015.

Who the hell is Lucy White?!

Ah, a quick google search reveals her as a rentagob for GB ‘news.’

I know which one is qualified to chair the budget debate.

All the supposedly progressive people saying 'Nigel Farage's racism doesn't matter. His fans love it'.

It matters whether the leader of the party leading all the opinion polls is an outright racist. It matters if he called black people 'wogs' and said 'gas them' to Jews. Not everything is a game

It's always a disingenuous bait-and-switch. Contrive an argument to oppose a specific trans-related thing, then invent a completely different one for the next trans-related thing, and so on. No common theme or consistency but transphobia.
Transphobes: "ban gender-affirming care for children - there's no evidence puberty blockers are safe!"

*New clinical trial assessing risks & benefits of puberty blockers announced*

Transphobes: "No - don't do that!"

The BBC makes itself *extremely* hard to love with this stuff. I’ve worked in more than one small newsroom that’s discovered to its immense frustration that the country’s biggest news org has stolen its work with no credit whatsoever.
I guess it’s a compliment that the top story on BBC London’s TV/online output today is a direct lift of a month-old London Centric story? But once again the BBC is consistently the worst news outlet for actually remembering to credit others.

A regular criticism I get from that kind of person is to say that 'we have tried this for the last 30 years and look where we are now', which even before 'I mean, 2025 is not so bad in the sweep of human history'...why do you think globalisation is a 30 year thing??
some of what they hate is globalisation, which like, what do you want me to do about that? uninvent oil tankers?

Global History is one of the most exciting areas of critical work at the moment for precisely the reason that it's blowing open parochialism across the whole field, and shattering base assumptions about today's world. It's brilliant.

God fuck OFF Lord Glasman. Just the worst. Pompous and more elite than me and cannot shut up about his weird obsessions.
There are some truly unhinged bits in the piece about Glasman, as to be expected when dealing with Glasman, but seriously what the actual? That's...one hell of a conflation of terminology.

'However, 16- and 17-year-olds can still be housed in so-called “supported accommodation” that does not provide day-to-day care. In exceptional circumstances, these older children can be placed in hostels, caravans, tents, boats, or shared housing with unrelated adults'

Tents? TENTS????
How is this not the top story on every news bulletin?
This has been happening for years and instead of doing anything to protect children successive governments have made the situation worse. This isn't just on councils. It is part of failings on a State level.

one of the underrated factors for the rise in scamming across U.S. society is the death of local media.
It gets lost in the shuffle, but the Speaker of the House is someone who, by all rights, should’ve had his career ended a decade ago by a Shreveport TV news investigative team.
Fond memories of that time Mike Johnson was president of a local law school that never opened its doors, in part because it was attached to a Baptist college that was losing its accreditation, and in part because it was always a scam from the start
