If Bad Bunny can cover the history of Puerto Rico, colonialism, transatlantic slavery, hemispheric consciousness, as well as contemporary life and politics in under 14 minutes, you can do your 15- or 20-minute conference presentation with time to spare.

“This refusal is consistent with Bad Bunny’s career-long rejection of the idea that global success requires crossing over into English. Instead, he has always invited those who do not speak Spanish to cross over themselves—to feel the rhythm, move with the music, and perhaps even learn a few words”

The Benito effect... activity on Bluesky spiked 70% during the Super Bowl 👀

When Bad Bunny was announced as performing the Super Bowl half time show I wrote a blog post talking about how the world we are fighting for sounds like Bad Bunny singing at the Super Bowl. Having seen the performance I am doubling down on that claim

Even though it appears that the intent was to represent Bad Bunny as a child, I see this as also representing the dreams of all Latinx children and their families, including Liam Ramos and his who immediately came to mind for me when I saw the child on the screen.

Since presumably the people complaining don’t know Spanish their assumption seems to be that the very presence of Spanish is a political message. This is a great example of a raciolinguistic ideology.

Something that Cosme shows in her interview for this article is that high quality interpretation is only possible when the interpreter has a rich and nuanced understanding of the cultural context. She lived the experiences Bad Bunny is singing about and that is not something you can learn in school.
Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show will be interpreted by Celimar Rivera Cosme into Puerto Rican Sign Language, a unique dialect used on the island that academic researchers and other experts consider endangered.
Bad Bunny’s Sign Language Interpreter Will Make Super Bowl History, Too
Puerto Rican Sign Language is not the same as American Sign Language. Celimar Rivera Cosme will uniquely capture the rapper’s slang for the game’s deaf viewers.

Of course the MAGA cult who worship a president mentioned thousands of times in files about a child sex trafficking ring would also select an entertainer who brags about preying on underage girls in his songs as the headliner of their anti-half time show.

“Bad Bunny’s performance isn’t just the story of the ascendancy of a single performer, or of one genre, or even of Latin music more broadly. It’s the sign of something bigger still. America’s pop culture today is multilingual, polycultural and international at its very core.”
This is very good

Puerto Ricans are not immigrants. What this illustrates is the racism that has always shaped the colonial relationship of Puerto Rico to the US.

What this also illustrates is that when you are a colonized subject your refusal to accommodate the colonizer will always be as a political message.
The Super Bowl halftime show, with Bad Bunny showcasing Latin music before a global television audience expected to top 100 million, will illustrate the nation’s immigration divide whether or not the reggaeton star delivers an explicit political message.

This blatant coverup further supports my claim that we are at the Mississippi Burning phase of our current era where the feds are now the white supremacists both killing white activists and working to cover it up

The same side having a complete meltdown about Bad Bunny performing at the Super Bowl wants you to believe that anger over depicting the Obamas as monkeys is “fake outrage.”

I think many people confuse partisan politics for ideology and so what they really mean to say is that Trump has no coherent partisan views but that is possible both because he is completely self-serving and more importantly the ideological foundation of partisan politics is white supremacy.
I’m not linking but I just read a columnist (one of my favorites) say Trump “has no ideology beyond his own power.”

Ten years in, this trope should die. Trump's ideology is white supremacist and that goes a long way in explaining his imperialism and protectionism.

In anticipation of the Super Bowl this weekend I thought I would reshare my post from when Bad Bunny was first announced as headlining the half time show to remind us that the joy many of us will feel is a reminder of the world we are fighting for.
