While not quite the same as last night, tonight's aurora has still had its moments! Taken just SW of the Twin Cities.

The effort my kids put into negotiating out of having to wear a coat and gloves in sub-freezing weather is really something.

Imagine being the QB of an NFL team, and during the game they zoom into a closeup on your face right as you start picking your nose. 🤣

Spent all afternoon in the heat and wind watching flag football. I feel like a raisin.
Looks like Minneapolis hit 90°F today, October 4th — the latest 90-degree day in city history.

What about authors of journal papers? Asking for a friend. ;)
In what’s being called the largest-ever settlement in a US copyright case — and potentially the first major payout to creatives whose work was used to train AI systems — Anthropic is to pay a staggering $1.5 billion, plus interest, to authors. www.theverge.com/anthropic/77...

If you see it, follow and share. It is legit and has some amazing, credible people behind it trying to plug leaks in the climate science world. Trust me on this one. More is coming....

We now live in the Pyrocene, a proposed new geologic epoch of fire activity brought about by human-caused climate change. Living in the Pyrocene means a new reality: knowing what the latest wildfire smoke forecasts are, in order to plan your outdoor activities. I review the best tools to do so:

After every weather-related natural disaster that results in tragic loss of life, meteorologists are always introspective about what we could have done better, where chains of communication broke down, etc. And that conversation is happening again now in our public discourse of social media. (1/2)

Look, I’m all for being angry at what they’ve done to the NWS. Heck, they stole my dream job, forcing me to move across the country to remain employed.

But the NWS was on top of this. Flash flood watch, warning, and emergency (causing EAS alert) were all issued in timely manner
When experts warned for months that the NWS “is being destroyed” by Trump’s personnel cuts, Howard Lutnick assured Congress that forecasting won’t be affected. Now TX officials are blaming a faulty forecast by NWS for the deadly impact of a storm. open.substack.com/pub/meidasto...

Every year that I try to grow a veggie garden I get a new nemesis for my shit list. One year it was squash bugs, another it was horn worms. Now, the deer are eating the tomatoes I grew from seed and have been babying along for three months. Assholes!

Visibility isn't too bad right now but unlike the past few days when the smoke was mostly aloft, the surface air is noticeably gross now. Wear masks if you plan to spend much time outside.
