*ahem* now for a professional one.

I am excited to announce the publication of The Digital 'Anon', a new digital edition of Virginia Woolf's final, unpublished essay drafts which makes this remarkable corpus available as an OA resource.

It is available here: www.digital-anon.com.

Why bother with QR at all? Why not just allocate funding based on which PIs seem the most clubbable?
;Eliminating funding for 3* research in the next Research Excellence Framework (REF) would benefit Russell Group institutions by about £50 million a year, suggests modelling into how potential changes to funding formulas may play out.' 1/3
‘Beware trade-offs’ of removing REF funding for 3* outputs
Review of formula used to allocate £2 billion QR funding could downgrade or withdraw money for ‘internationally excellent’ research, some fear

Tired: Teaching kids cursive because of ideology
Wired:Teaching kids cursive because of palaeography
Inspired: Teaching kids Carolingian miniscule
Came across this on Instagram and was immediately annoyed - most people currently alive can’t read most historical documents for a myriad of reasons that far exceed handwriting. That’s why people who actually do read those documents (historians) learn palaeography!

Can we make some sort of NYE-lite that isn’t anathema to people who would like a little socialising but also prefer to be in bed at a decent hour?

It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they executed tiny Tim, who did NOT die
It was the day tiny Tim, who did NOT die, exploded.
This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
Tiny
Tim, who did
NOT die,

and who
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
he was delicious
so sweet
and so cold

Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair"

With a sudden intensity, as if he saw it clear for a second, he drew a line there, in the centre. It was done; it was finished. Yes, Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, thought, laying down his brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision.
Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, stood by himself against the hills, holding darkness within; he had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more.
The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On one of those rocks is Tiny Tim, who did NOT die—under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are his. I am haunted by waters.

Suing my institution because nobody checks the weekly events newsletter
Also, who do I need to write to complain about the substandard advertising used to promote my events at universities? Pfft. Have university administrators never heard of Canva?

Who’s going to tell them all that the research is fun, and why many of us got into academia*?

I fell in love with research. I am infatuated by it. I am obsessed with creating new knowledge. Research is at least 60% reading what other people have written and think. Reading is part of the fun.

Revoke their qualifications, take their jobs and redistribute them among those of us who actually *want* to be intellectually responsible and rigorous members of an academic community.
I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

Headington Hill zipline when?
Following the news that Paris has launched a cable car, a councillor is calling to explore this in Oxford. Green City & County Councillor Emily Kerr said “Cable cars are cheap, fun, and low-environmental impact. We should be following transport innovators like Paris in considering all options."
Europe’s longest urban cable car unveiled in Paris 17 years after initial proposal
The innovative new project will connect the south-eastern region of the city which is poorly served by public transport

Today in Cartopia, the town built entirely for cars, an alarm has been going off in one of my local car parks for OVER TWELVE HOURS. It was going off when I went to bed last night and the same alarm is going off now.

Counterpoint: imagine being one of the Stranger Things kids who goes to college and gets told, by a rich kid, their freshman year, “I’m going to study the works of Jacques Derrida!” and muttering “what the hell?”
1987 was a hell of a time. GI Joe lunch boxes. Trapper Keepers. Entire essays premised on being aggrieved that a book about puns did not sacrifice sufficient hekatombs to Derrida’s work on Joyce.
