So I am running the London Lea Valley 50km in March and trying to raise some money for Step Forward - a youth centre in Tower Hamlets, Kiddo attends their LGBTQIA+ group and it's been such a brilliant and supportive space for them, which feels so important when trans youth are under constant attack.

As we enter into what will likely be another "annus odusseia" here are some resources on Homer and the Odyssey for audiences of different levels and interest

So I have just added a section to my CV titled 'Research-informed fiction' and honestly I feel genuinely so good about that. Merry Christmas to me, I guess.

The innkeeper isn't the bad guy in the story, he's a *good guy* in the story. He *doesn't have room in his inn* and then *finds a spot for Mary anyway*. And this act of kindness is why Jesus is born in a manger -- warm, dry, safe, surrounded by people that love him -- instead of out in the desert

Went for my first run after a month off from surgery - felt really good and looking forward to getting back into proper training for the London Lea Valley 50km. I’m running to raise money for Step Forward, a charity that supports youth in Tower Hamlets - including an excellent LGBTQIA+ youth group.

Parents & anyone else up early on Christmas morning: there’s a bright pass of the International Space Station over the UK, just after 6.15.

Well, I say it’s the ISS. Could be Santa heading home…

There is no ethical use of AI because the continued existence of the AI industry is directly harmful to (alongside everyone else) the interests of everyone whose labour makes books exist—writers of fiction & nonfiction, illustrators, translators, researchers, editors, everyone.

Would you like to see a chameleon wearing a ladybird as a hat?

What a silly question. Of course you want to see a chameleon wearing a ladybird as a hat.

It’s obviously just every other Christopher Nolan movie ever made, but set in mythical Ancient Greece.

I hate to sounds cynical but also I can’t believe anyone is surprised by this.

You can tell the Autism assessment was written by an allistic person because you have to mime brushing your teeth.

If an Autistic person wrote it would be mime putting on socks.

Need to write one of those hustle day-in-the-life stories from the perspective of my baby. “I start the day at 4am — sleep is for the weak. I don’t do traditional meals. Instead I refuel with a personalised drink developed to fulfil all my needs. And I spend 1-2 hours a day just screaming, yeah.”

Who’s going to tell them all that the research is fun, and why many of us got into academia*?

I fell in love with research. I am infatuated by it. I am obsessed with creating new knowledge. Research is at least 60% reading what other people have written and think. Reading is part of the fun.

Babe, if you can’t write it without genAI maybe just accept you can’t write it.

I don’t design my coursework with different ethics and principles than those I expect from myself. Deep reading, sincere effort, meticulous citations, a willingness to acknowledge mistakes, honesty and humility are all things I want from students AND myself. And that shapes how I see gAI.

And, no, the fact that the AHA report is about gAI in history education doesn’t make it better or different. The AHA is still saying that certain unethical uses of gAI (to generate ‘historical images’ whatever that is, or to summarize scholarship) are acceptable.
Let’s not pretend that is ok.

Did I just move my longest run next week to Christmas Day?

Yes. Yes I did. And I’m not sorry about it.

(My first post-surgery run is Wednesday, and I am SO EXCITED)

Just read a baffling story about Lady Louise Windsor sitting on the floor of a packed train from London to Bristol where the take away seemed to be ‘but she’s a royal!’ and not ‘how mad that our rail system is so broken that anyone has to sit in the floor and pay £100+ for the privilege!’

Would love any scholarly organisations to come out with a guide to using genAI in that discipline, open the document, see this:

Here is the rules of giving advice on the internet:
1. Unless asked for: don’t.
2. If asked for, read the request and answer the actual question.
