🧊 New research reveals an overlooked Antarctic process that may skew sea level rise projections.

☀️ A team led by Dr @fabiobdias.bsky.social (ACEAS/UNSW) found East Antarctica ice shelves melt in summer bursts as sea ice retreats and warm water flows underneath.

Overlooked melting in East Antarctica could skew sea level rise projections - ACEAS
New research into how East Antarctica’s ice shelves melt reveals future global sea-level rise predictions could be significantly underestimated.

I gotta say, watching US news roll in from a remote South Pacific island is surreal and it makes everyone capitulating to King Toddler look totally idiotic. And literally no one I’ve run into can believe this is happening or understand why no one is stopping him.

The cycling of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the ocean is closely linked to seawater alkalinity and the regulation of atmospheric CO2. In the modern pelagic ocean, almost all CaCO3 is produced by three...

I have achieved the impossible and got my COVID booster in Florida. The CVS pharmacist said “we have tons, and we can’t give them to anyone.” She also said that doctors are super frustrated and asking if they can call in one script for all of their patients, but the CVS system can’t handle that…

The latest #TalesFromTheDeep episode on the StoryCorps Archive is from Carl Brenner, director of the U.S. Science Support Program for scientific ocean drilling. Take a listen to Carl's background -you might be surprised at what he majored in at college- and his leadership role in this community. 🌊⚒️
"What scientific ocean drilling has done for the nation and globally is yielded a staggering amount of information about Earth history"
“The breadth of the science that is done in this program is pretty exciting and you don't have to be a trained marine geologist to appreciate that.” This quote comes from Carl Brenner, the director of...

We are giving up global leadership. Are we great yet? What can you do? Call your representatives. Ask why Russia and China are building more ice breakers. Why risk national and economic security by ignoring sea level rise?

I have so many angry and unkind thoughts about the decisions made by the head of OCE and then the GEO directorate more recently. First the JR and then this. For what? My two science platforms are gone and with them my hopes of new science. I’m glad Mike is talking to journalists. He was a great PO.

Excited to enter “descendant of religious nutcases who came over on the Mayflower”. Maybe it will help me during my proposal’s gold standard political review. Of course I’ve got gender working against me so I probably won’t ever get funded… with that, is everyone excited about Taylor’s new album?
Huh. I don't remember the federal government asking me what flavor of "white" I am before. This list of what are I think meant to be ethnicities also seems really arbitrary, and doesn't map out onto ethnicities per se. (This is for an NSF annual personnel report for a graduate training program.)

The Trump administration’s pressure on universities echoes past authoritarian efforts in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

Universities in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union thought giving in to government demands would save their independence
Before the Nazis, German universities were among the best in the world. Step by step, the universities gave up their independence until they were instruments of the state.

So far the plan has seen minimal pushback from Congress.

Devastating for US Antarctic researchers. US abdicating multiple global leadership roles in marine science. USAP people, we need a professional lobbyist-large sections of both senate and house bills dedicated to drilling and nothing about the NBP. Community led push needed and a comms strategy.
