Wow just wow, I hope this is real—what a cool story about a weird restaurant name (Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse)
I LEARNED THE ANSWER TO THIS
Chris's Steakhouse was a New Orleans landmark
Chris Matulich periodically got bored, sold it, waited for the new owner to fail, and bought it back cheap
The sale conditions: Can't move it, can't change the name
He did this six times
Then he sold it to Ruth Fertel

Huge paper for the Arctic Ocean published today in @science.org - a new 30,000 year history of Arctic Ocean sea-ice cover reconstructed from the accumulation of cosmic dust-derived helium-3! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... (1/n)
Cosmic dust reveals dynamic shifts in central Arctic sea-ice coverage over the past 30,000 years
Arctic sea-ice loss affects biological productivity, sustenance in coastal communities, and geopolitics. Forecasting these impacts requires mechanistic understanding of how Arctic sea ice responds to ...

I'm really interested in the idea that periodically (?) being super cold can help you live healthier longer. Probably because I grew up surfing New Jersey winters (in very poorly insulated '90s wetsuits).

This whale lives for centuries: its secret could help extend human lifespan
A cold-activated protein that mends damaged DNA could play a part in keeping the bowhead whale in tip-top shape.

And in the same vein, I think progressives who implicitly or explicitly denigrate protesters today as boomers, tourists, weekend warriors, amateurs, etc., are not doing us any favors. Yes, we need regular folks. But we are strong, we are many - in numerical terms we are almost unrivaled in history.

These are mostly indigenous communities in Alaska that have been slammed by the storm.
The local manager of a small airline fleet says he is the only one doing evacuations right now!
Defund FEMA and people are abandoned. Defund public media and no-one knows.
FYI, today is Indigenous Peoples Day.

The researchers used a cutting-edge approach to predict future ocean conditions by examining the distant past through analyses of microscopic fossils.

Today, we published a study long in the making on how upper and subsurface tropical Pacific waters responded (and maybe will adjust) to warmer global climate. Here’s the story of how we got here after 15 years. many authors but shout out @jfarmersalmanac.bsky.social
