2/10: From this morning to this afternoon, apparently there are these things called grass and soil under the #snowcrete. 🤔 After 17 days, I was starting to have doubts. #Maryland #thaw

2/9: As the mid-Atlantic now has a week of above freezing #temperatures in the forecast, there is quite a bit of #seaice and #snow to melt. #Thaw

An X8.1 class flare just occurred, courtesy of @solarham.bsky.social (awaiting word from @nws.noaa.gov’s Space Weather Prediction Center if a coronal mass ejection is Earth directed).

As the “ #BombCyclone ” moves away from the east coast, and the skies clear, here’s a view of where the #snowpack has accumulated…or in the case of the rest of us, where it still remains

How #cold has it been in the mid-Atlantic? Cold enough that the National Ice Center is tracking ice formation in area waterways. 🧊🥶

Further increases in confidence for an impactful winter storm are noted across the Carolinas with greater uncertainty still farther up the coast.

@nws.noaa.gov Director Ken Graham presented on NOAA’s modeling grand challenge at #AMS2026 this morning. He announced that the NWS is moving to MPAS as its modeling dynamical core, with his #1 moonshot goal being a global, fully coupled 3-km Earth prediction system using MPAS.

7 p.m. — Precipitation finally about to taper

The end of the sleet and freezing rain is mercifully in sight. Radar from 6:45pm (shown below) and short-term models both suggest the precipitation should quickly taper from west to east across the region between 7 and 8 p.m.
January 26, 2026 at 12:03 AM
6:43 PM EST, 1/25: Precipitation switched to #FreezingRain around 3:45 PM, so things are iced over now in South #Bowie, #Maryland. I could not get a good picture of the measurement, but here are the totals:

#FreezingRain 0.06”
#Sleet 2”
#Snow 5” (8” so far this winter)

Fascinating local temperature variations... TEENS west of Beltway but upper 20s to east... this is a rough dividing line between more sleet and more freezing rain.
Crazy that it's 18 on American Legion Bridge but 28 at Reagan National Airport

3:30 PM EST, 1/25: #Snow and #sleet combined measurement from South #Bowie, #Maryland is 6.4”, and using a cleared area for just #sleet (yes, I’m a nerd) yields 1.4” so far.

Given this, the season to date #snow total is up to 8”. #Sleet continues to fall heavily.
