Hey friends! Jay is looking for work, ideally in policy and/or advocacy, and he’s brilliant at so many things. Please let him know if you know of any positions available! We are currently in New York City, but Jay can also work remotely, and we’d be open to moving for the right opportunity.
It's been five months since I was laid off, and I'm still hunting for work.

I'd still like to stay in policy and/or advocacy; but at this point, I'm open to pretty much anything.

The only appropriate response to this is impeachment and removal from office. Every moment the political press spends spinning out theories about 2026 and immigration polling is a minute they are not spending asking Republicans in Congress about their plans to enforce the rule of law

Curtailing people’s ability to read widely and carefully, to locate, assess, and compare different sources for themselves, and to write in their own voice about what they find and what it means, is arguably more effective than censorship. It is also one of the most obvious effects of generative AI.

imagine not understanding that Ghibli's cozy food and windswept vistas are intended to contrast the struggle against the horrors, and the difficult but necessary work and pain of fighting for a slice of peace

the point is that the comforts are worth fighting for, but make no mistake: it's a fight

For anyone else in this position, Please never underestimate the usefulness of annoying the shit out of govt officials, organizing meal trains, being the support person who stays home to be jail support during protests etc etc. I know Gwen knows. Lot of y'all still can learn to help.
There are a lot of us who are not well-positioned for street activism (in my case, I can't risk detainment because my youngest still mostly depends on breast milk for calories), and discounting work that can be done on digital space isn't just inaccurate, it's shaming of vulnerable people
I have a client stewing in shame about not doing enough to counter anti-trans and fascist actions, paralyzing himself by saying that no action is good enough except for the one he is too socially anxious to do.

For some, sending words might be a small risk that builds momentum for further action.

New starter pack: people who’ve edited comics, past and present! Some of these folks are career editors, some used to be editors, some are best known for other things, some have only edited an anthology here or there.

Well, while we’re on the topic. My Congressman just reintroduced the Airborne Act which would create tax incentives to run indoor air quality assessments (funded up to 100% of cost) and make the needed upgrades (funded up to 50%).

Beginning/very new writers worry about a lot of things. How do I start? What if all my ideas are stupid? What can I do to make my work salable? Should I dig a hole in the woods and bury my computer and then dive to the bottom of the sea & be eaten by starfish?

These are all valid questions. But!

PSA: LABELERS WORK!

The @profile-labels.bossett.social labeler just tipped me off to a scam before I wasted any time (or money!).

When Lars won the #mayllennial prize money, I asked where to send it, and a scammer quickly imitated them and was outed by the new account / no display name labels 🙂

FYI don’t support Autism Speaks, they’re a harmful organization.
I see Autism Speaks has had some large national fundraisers recently as part of Autism Awareness Month, so a reminder that they are pretty terrible as an organization, and see autism as something to be cured rather than accepted. Organizations run by folks with autism are in the linked article.
The Autist Papers: The problem with Autism Speaks
“Autism should be celebrated, not stamped down in individuals from a young age,” writes Liv Cushman.
