I know which restaurants are say, 12 mins away. Give or take a little if it’s super hot, or windy. Driving? Might spend 30% of that time waiting for a parking space to open or walking three blocks after parking.
Predictability is one of the best things about cycling for transport. I know exactly how much time it will take me to get to the office, the opera, or to see a friend. No surprise traffic congestion, no commute suddenly taking 30 min longer for no reason.

Couldn't agree more, as someone who tries to keep an entire intersection and its crosswalks clean. It's incredibly physically demanding and no one should depend on some rando being well-rested to go for a walk around their neighborhood safely. The #1 villain is DPW plowing snow back into crosswalks.
One of the reasons I really want to see people recognizing that cities, not individual households, should be responsible for snow removal is that this kind of plow mound is nearly impossible to remove by hand. Regular folks can't do it without a snowblower, not everyone has a place to keep one.

If you're struggling with the weight of the daily horrors and despairingly ask "what can I do?"

This. This is one easy thing you can do. Help your neighbors. "Be excellent to each other."
I can't do anything about so many problems.

But my neighbors are elderly. And I can clear the snow off of their sidewalk while it's still mostly powder.

Made on MLK Day with some folks who designed this for a recent RW24.

Little did I know, riding my first bike unimpeded down dirt roads safely and unsupervised, that someday it would consume 90% of my thoughts that today’s children can’t do the same

#e-bike users.

Hi there!
I'm looking for a robust and simple e-bike as an alternative to a mobility scooter. I'm too tall for most seated scooters, Ideally I want the portability of a towbar mountable bike, and the option of pedals for leg exercise...
Can anyone advise on reputable brands? Thanks!

Maybe you see my #PlowSidewalksToo hashtag and think, "Yeah, sure, sounds great but it would require a massive tax increase and expansion of the public payroll and no one is going to willingly sign on for that. Real shame, though."

So: a thread. 🧵

I rarely weigh in on these now but just as a reminder:

We shame kids to be perfect despite already knowing that they are predictably NOT, that being said just look at the environment that we continually build for them to exist in.

Cars in cities are an invasive species. When you don't solidify infrastructure to protect the integrity of active mobility, it will be hampered by multi-ton vehicles driven by entitlement to space.
In the past a flex post was here to “protect” the bike lane. The driver seemed surprised to see me biking here

Love being rewarded for getting out there and shoveling crosswalks early with plows coming by an hour later pushing snow back into them so the cars don't get scared.

Dineen Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin — 2026

Named after former Parks Commissioner Cornelius Dineen, this largely residential neighborhood on Milwaukee’s North Side is home for about 4,000 people and the final resting place for 150,000 souls in the 196-acre Holy Cross Cemetery.

Good reminder for those of us drive sometimers. We all know that a driver that stays just that much further back says “I’m holding back the other dingleberries behind me until you get to a safe place for me to pass” and it helps a lot. It also subtly tells other drivers “this is a thing you can do”.
A driver’s perspective on passing a cyclist safely. A short thread.

I was driving to work and came up behind a cyclist. High vis, tail lights, mirror. They kept checking over their shoulder. I know that look. Starting your day already bracing for nonsense.

They actually did really well, even getting out of the UTVs and using a shovel to clean bus stops. Maybe the recent Facebook dustup sharpened the focus. Unfortunately, the obsession with cleaning every square inch means they shoved piles of leaves and ice on to sidewalks and crosswalks overnight.
It’s 8 AM the morning after snow and the entirety of the village streets appear to be completely plowed already. Let’s see how many weeks it is until sidewalks in the business district are plowed…
