My partner is part of this cohort - and I went through the equivalent process when I lived in Hong Kong. After 7 years on a work visa, I was given Permanent Residency, as a right under HK law, not a discretionary privilege.
Changing the rules under people trying to build a life would be appalling.
You may have heard about UK ministers' plan to double to 10 years the time needed to reached settled status in the UK. But did you realise that it threatened access to pensions for the 180,000 people who came from Hong Kong on the UK government's visa scheme? My dispatch: www.ft.com/content/8b91...

One thing which would much more clearly delineate anti-Israel sentiment from (sometimes partially disguised, sometimes not) anti-Semitism would be ending the use of the word Zionist as an acceptable euphemism for Jew.

But of course the people using it like that know exactly what they mean...

One of these rich dudes invested in a food company with all proceeds going to kids in need. The other started Sundance Institute, boosting the lives of countless artists. Hey modern rich dudes, don't be a typical greedy AI crypto-prick, be like these two.

Hi guys, did you already know there are competitions for window tinting? With better commentators than most of the tennis matches I’ve watched on ESPN? (Low bar I know)

Anyway if you need to procrastinate harder than you’ve ever procrastinated before, I got you

This They Might Be Giants TONIGHT SHOW performance of "Birdhouse In Your Soul" from 1990 remains firmly lodged in my noggin thanks to the Tonight Show Band's full commitment and Doc Severinsen's incredible trumpeting... It took an already great song and made it transcendent.

"We were both too tired to sleep"
"So tired that I couldn't even sleep"

Two back-to-back songs played randomly in order from my regular songs playlist tonight, both oddly referring to trains...

Is Jurassic World Rebirth the first (major, Hollywood) movie to use the phrase "open source" as a verb, meaning to release to the world in a non-proprietary form? Has it actually gone mainstream?

I'm in my late 40s, got quite nice-looking gray patches on my chin when I let the beard grow, and rapidly-thinning-to-balding hair on top. Such is life, there are many more serious things to worry about...
My beard is flecked with grey these days (I'm 44) and I don't mind it. Adds a bit of variety.
I’m turning 40 this year and I just found my first sparkly grey hair. It looks like a piece of tinsel and I love it

C: 香港人,加油!
E: "HKers, add oil!"/"Go! HKers!"

The slogan would turn more grim as the protest wore on... but these words of encouragement were also used for Wuhan during their lockdown.

This took me *so long* to get - I think I was randomly listening to the radio show once and it suddenly hit me!
Possibly the "What's so bad about being drunk?" "Ask a glass of water" joke from Hitch-Hiker's. It took me about 20 years to get.
What’s the slowest burn on you realising something? I think with me it’s working out what the “lithic” in Neolithic means which - despite me reading the word at a bare minimum thousands of times *and* me being aware of other connected lith words - just didn’t click until about 18 months back.
