I think a great fictional example is in DS9, Kai Winn is having a crisis of faith, and Kira advises her to step down and embrace her religious beliefs, instead of the power as the head of said religion.

I think modern remakes of the Universal Monsters fail not because people don't want them, but because they over complicate things.
Make Frankenstein grotesque. Show Dracula outright biting. Let the Wolf Man tear someone apart on screen.
That and updated dialogue is all these films need.
