Bridging my current life in Chicago and my past life in D.C., I argue today at @newrepublic.com that Democrats should ~never~ vote to fund this government. Make John Thune blow up Senate rules and Republicans wholly own the U.S. extra-military military doing war crimes against us, funded by us.
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

While progressives often get accused of undermining the Democratic Party, the evidence shows that it’s the moderate wing that most often violates the “Vote Blue No Matter Who” principle.

so lemme get this right- people are being taken off the street by masked LEOs, politicians are arrested, assassinated, and the president of the United States of America acted unilaterally and without provocation, congressional approval or justification committed an Act of War on a sovereign nation?

The reason I wake up sad every day is because theres a real possibility everyone my age will have lived their whole lives & eventually die & in that whole time all the money will have made sure not one thing will have fundamentally changed in Democratic politics.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Congrats to my Senator @alsobrooks.senate.gov for co-sponsoring Donald Trump’s Make Crypto Great Again bill!

The president is very happy with your work on his behalf. I hope you’re proud of yourself, and can sleep at night!
Congrats, Senate Dems. Trump loves the crypto bill so many of you voted for

What have they learned?

Nobody undermines Democratic Party credibility like the party itself. Not even a political assassination will make them think twice about voting with Republicans on crypto and approving Trump nominees. What’s the actual point?

the story of 2019-2024 was institutions from Silicon Valley to the police facing a modicum of accountability and radicalizing themselves into support of a leader and party who promised unaccountability
What we have here is an example of an incredibly effective political action by the police that is getting blamed on progressives by people who are looking for a reason to blame them. It's bad faith all the way down.

Schumer stopped the Senate to announce that this happened, in the middle of debate on a bill where Democrats were collaborating with Republicans on crypto legislation.
How you can compartmentalize these two things is beyond me.

So what's the centrist plan here? Democrats have to win. Alright, why? To arrest the growth of the fascist right through sweeping political reforms? No. To enact an ambitious policy agenda? No. To do policy like we did 30 years ago and hope everyone likes it and we're fine again? This will work?

Biden won in 2020 by very explicitly keeping The Left - in a time of incredible social turmoil! - on his side. Everyone understood that at the time but the centrist dipshits were enraged and have spent every second since trying to ensure they win - or lose if necessary - without doing that

this is such good news. i think it is also an opportunity for democrats to state forthrightly that when they win power again everyone responsible for this crime will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law and will face the american people to answer for their lawlessness
