Read a bunch of answers here and most say our current times feel equally bad, at the least. Both times being terrible.
I need to hear from the folks in the 60/70s and protesting Vietnam (and everything else)...did shit feel as corrupt, unjust, overwhelming, and impossible to overcome as they do now? Not inviting you to compare, more how you felt in the moment, not knowing what you know now

A Wall Street Journal article on guaranteed income wouldn’t stop people from wanting to work. It challenges the notion that unconditional cash makes people “lazy,” noting that employment incentives depend on broader economic and social conditions. zurl.co/NJa9c
Essay | A Guaranteed Income Won’t Stop People From Wanting to Work
Economists worry that a ‘universal basic income’ would make recipients lazier. Data from programs around the world suggests the opposite is true.

The internet blackout in Iran last now around 350h, more than 2 weeks.

It is evident that it is to control information leaving the country, but it is also meant to obstruct that Iranians can organize themselves against the regime.

Weer niet gebeten
De wereld weet sinds Davos niet of de EU écht kan bijten, ziet FD-columnist Mathijs Bouman. En nog belangrijker: Europa weet zelf ook niet of het dat durft.

more and more people are saying
ICE’s cruelty knows no bounds. Deporting children with cancer. Shooting moms. And now, using a 5 year-old as “bait” to detain his family.

It’s far past clear: ICE must be abolished. Congress should not give it any additional funding. And the people responsible for its crimes should face charges.
"[M]asked agents apprehended 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos in his driveway on Tuesday...[the agent] led him to the door and directed him to knock on the door asking to be let in in order to see if anyone else was home, essentially using a 5-year-old as bait.”

The brilliance of Carney's "Sign in the Window" speech was that he was not attacking totalitarianism, but the hypocrisy of liberal democracies. It's about how we pretended to believe the fiction of a rules-based international order because it was convenient—and that time has come to be honest.
“The system’s power comes not from its truth but from everyone’s willingness to perform as if it were true.”

Mark Carney explains how totalitarianism works.

The lesson couldn’t be more clear: do not obey in advance. That is how freedom erodes and dignity disappears.

The TACO cycle:

Markets want to price in TACO. But TACO only works if Trump sees stocks tank.

So we get a loop: Trump does things → nothing happens (markets already priced in TACO) → that emboldens him to do more → until markets start to think he might not TACO → stocks fall → TACO is restored.

This is the best speech, just from a pure rhetoric perspective - its sophistication and persuasiveness - that I've seen a politician deliver in a good long while. Really recommend watching or reading the whole thing.

I say this about Carney's speech even as I think his decision to build a "new strategic partnership" with China will, long-term, be problematic. But if America plays stupid games, we shouldn't be surprised if it wins stupid prizes.
