There is a lot of talk about higher defense spending in NATO, but I think many politicians have failed to explain adequately why that is necessary. So in this video I explain what is at stake for citizens in Western European countries.
Why spend more on defense in Western Europe?

We have some dangerous years ahead in terms of world security, writes Alexander With, a regular contributor to Logic of War. The war in Ukraine is still escalating, pressure on Putin is growing, and a conflict with China is on the horizon. (no paywall)
The coming years will be even more dangerous than 2025
By Alexander With The war in Ukraine is escalating. While the front line is mostly static, both sides have ramped up their ability to conduct strategic bombing with drones and missiles. The cost of w...

Georgia’s Interior Ministry has issued directives to the organizers of the next weekly march in Tbilisi, which typically draws thousands of protesters. According to the notice, protesters must (a) stay strictly on the sidewalk and (b) not obstruct pedestrian movement, which seems impossible.
Despite mass arrests and draconian laws and fines, Georgians still take to the streets every day in 8+ cities. 🇬🇪🇪🇺

Day 388 of nonstop protests in Tbilisi.

The least we can do is much more material support, training, forces in support roles and partake fully in air defence. None of these would make us warring parties. When NATO breaks down fully, Europeans need to include 🇺🇦 in European collective defence. That would mean combat roles as well

Probably not the outcome Putin and Trump would be hoping for from a Ukrainian election. That said, it's easy to have high ratings as a popular former commander in chief who officially is not running for office. It would be interesting to see how Zaluzhnyi would manage a competitive campaign.
⚡️ Ukraine election poll shows tight first round, decisive Zaluzhnyi runoff win over Zelensky.

In a hypothetical runoff between the two, Zaluzhnyi would secure a decisive victory, winning 64% of the vote compared to Zelensky's 36%, according to the poll.

Because famously, all other nuclear weapon states are totally not threatening to the United States.
JD Vance has declared that France and the United Kingdom having nuclear weapons is a security threat to the United States.

Russia and MAGA want every remaining democracy in the world to be weakened and defenseless.

A transatlantic showdown over tech policy (as opposed to, say, net zero) could actually have a unifying & galvanising political effect within the EU. The union’s digital regulations are broadly popular and many voters actually want more, not fewer, controls on Big Tech.

The biggest threat to free speech in Europe is the US government.
Hey @jd-vance-1.bsky.social, can you please tell us more about how free speech is threatened in Europe?
Trump posts early on Christmas Eve: "If Network NEWSCASTS, and their Late Night Shows, are almost 100% Negative to President Donald J. Trump, MAGA, and the Republican Party, shouldn’t their very valuable Broadcast Licenses be terminated? I say, YES!"

These 20 points look pretty good for Ukraine. The chance of Russia accepting this plan is zero. There is no indication that the negotiations have moved anywhere substantially in terms of ending the war.

American tech companies are not truly concerned about censorship, as they happily operate in countries with strict regulations.

You never hear the Trump administration complain about Saudi Arabia, Russia, or China.

This is about bullying Europe, nothing more

Dear Media,

When JD Vance says "take the country back," what do you think he means? What would the party that controls the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, and various state goats—plus leading businesses, media orgs, and more—take back? Take what from whom?

Thanks,

1. This is terrible.
2. This is such a BS claim from a university: “We are committed to teaching students how to think, not what to think.” No! We do, in fact, commit to teaching you what to think. You sign up for a psych course, you have to learn psychology. You can ignore it later if you choose.
