Delighted to announce that my long-awaited paper on the NZ Thesis Project is published (& is open access)! Deborah and I worked hard to write this because we would love for all academic libraries to link their data to Wikidata - this tells you why and how

Ok but we should make sure we have a wealth tax too *just in case*
They aren’t going anywhere.
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.

Three books that stayed with you this year? Mine are The Defiance of Frances Dickinson, by Wendy Parkins, a fictionalised retelling of a true story of a 19thC woman trying to get away from a brutal husband, resulting in public scandal. Then Kate Moore’s The Woman They Could Not Silence, which I

And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, grew up to become a single man in possession of a good fortune, and in want of a wife.
And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, and next appears in the narrative as a Valkyrie, having joined the host of Odin’s chosen-daughters via some process obscured by a lacuna in the manuscript.

This is a great example of how genAI steals from us all on multiple levels. It's stolen a promotional spot for real books and authors, it's stolen a job from an actual journalist who could have compiled this, it's stolen an opportunity for parents to be recommended good NZ books for their kids
#4 sounds like a lovely book but I didn't write it. Have had whānau up and down the country send me clippings lol
Whoever put together this list that has been circulated to regional papers, didn't fact check.

The World Literacy Foundation sent out a press release promoting kids books, half of which don’t exist (and it’s pretty obvious when you look at the original press release). The state of it.
I’ve done some catalogue searching and am fairly confident in saying that 5/10 titles in this list do not exist (1, 2, 4, 5 and 7).
Sloppy, unacceptable, and a real kick in the guts to real authors with real books they’d love people to buy and read!

Almost midnight on Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas everyone! #WikiAdvent #Day24
Welcome to #WikiAdvent #Day24
Today I'm thinking about nativity scenes. If you have a nativity scene in your house, you might be adding a figure to it day by day, in which case the baby is about to appear. There are lots of types of nativity, including those in /1

I neglected my #WikiADvent #Day23 post yesterday because I realised that after radishes...it finished with Nesselrode pudding, which I drafted a page for and then left sitting in limbo all year! I finally published it today...so you can now read about them. :)
Welcome to #WikiAdvent #Day23
Today I saw the Night of the Radishes on the “On this day” section of Wikipedia’s front page, and couldn’t help but click. It turns out to be an annual festival in Oaxaca where they carve giant radishes and make displays of them! /1

The article you’re sharing touts a teacher making students use “A.i.” to design ugly sweaters. That’s a repugnant use of tech based on theft to rob kids of the chance to use their own minds and hands to actually draw. Do you support that attack on human creativity?

Welcome to #WikiAdvent #Day22
Today I'm thinking about Christmas lights. Specifically the over-the-top can-hardly-see-the-house-for-the-decorations type. Weirdly plenty of people do this in NZ even though sunset is after 9.30pm on Christmas Eve and it isn't /1 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christm...

Video essay: That OU Essay Is Supposed to Be Bad

I approached the OU essay as an editor and realized it didn’t want to be fixed.

Thoughts on craft, refusal, ugliness, and why some writing is bad on purpose.

#WikiAdvent #Day21 just sneaking in before midnight….tucked up in bed thinking about Yule logs because just like last year it’s wet and cold again!
Welcome to #WikiAdvent #Day21
Today is wet and somewhat cold (again) so I’m thinking of warm things like fires, which led me to the Yule Log tradition. As a kid I just knew a Yule Log as a chocolate cake we got to shape, ice and decorate at school. I thought it was invented for fruit cake-haters. /1

33 years ago today we buried my sister’s husband

He died when a car rounding a corner on SH1 lost control & hit him head-on

It was their eldest’s 15th birthday

The crash left 5 children without a father

My sister never recovered from the trauma of losing him this way

PLEASE take care out there

“It’s good for image analysis! Useful in medicine!” we get told. Yeah maybe if you’re a white man. For everyone else AI just replicates or worsens existing bias and because it’s a black box you can just ignore that!

#WikiAdvent #Day20 haha it was 3C today and I got caught right in a blast of freezing rain so it’s good to know it’s just like last year! A thread about snowmen (includes “adult content” apparently)
Welcome to #WikiAdvent #Day20
Today I'm mostly thinking about snowmen! It feels a suitable topic because it’s cold and wet here today (though not quite that cold). There have probably been snowmen as long as there have been people and snow - but documentation of that is another matter. /1
