Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

My main opinion on Graham Platner is if there was a 41 year old guy running in the Republican primary for the Maine Senate seat and it turned out that he had a Nazi tattoo for 15 years and then he claimed that he just didn't know it was a Nazi tattoo, none of you would ever stop screaming about it.

Devastated to learn that Univ of Texas at Austin is closing the American Studies dept. The years I spent there earning my PhD were formative, making me the teacher, thinker, and writer I am today. I've passed on what I learned at UT to thousands of students over the past 20 years. Just awful.

A brief thread on the history of FEMA and how it ended up in DHS. Right now, FEMA and its staff are caught up in the partial shutdown.
That’s a good question. While federal involvement has existed for over a hundred years it was largely ad hoc. In 1973 the responsibilities were brought under HUD where it remained until Carter Admin created FEMA In 1979.
