Goddammit.

When a bunch of folks were making fun of the bodies of the Texas National Guard deployed to Illinois, my reaction was that those folks signed up to help their neighbors, not to be an invading army.

This sucks so much.
I found this terribly sad. A young woman with her life ahead of her, and she becomes one of the last American victims of the Long War.

This is to say: this golf course could be housing 13000-25000 people, AND generating $20-30 million / year in taxes, the entire size of the Dept of Neighborhoods, or >25% of the Seattle Public Schools deficit.

Instead it’s paying $85,770 in taxes and housing no one.

Assessments consider land and "improvements" (the structures) separately.

The land only (no improvements) of a parcel near me is assessed at $11,000,000\acre.

At that value, this golf course would pay over 12 mil in taxes.

The folks at @afghanevac.bsky.social have in hand a new USCIS directive which largely targets Afghan refugees who fled the Taliban in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal in 2021.

In case you needed a reminder that the most loathsome people in the world work for DHS.

My food bad take/confession is that I think mashed potatoes are the most mediocre way to prepare potatoes 😓 because it's potatoes, they're edible and not "bad" or "gross", but in my opinion just about any other way to prepare a potato is better 🫠🥔
my take on Food Discourse is that it's always ridiculous but it's also nice to be fighting about dumb internet shit again instead of dealing with Oppressive Despair all the time so please keep posting your bad takes

Congress wrote into the law that someone who overstays a visa while applying for asylum is not considered to be accruing “unlawful presence,” but it didn’t explicitly say those people couldn’t be arrested and detained — because it was presumed that they wouldn’t be. Well, Trump is doing it.
We came to LA as refugees from the USSR in 1991. Life wasn’t easy, but we persevered and, I dare say, came to contribute something of worth to this nation.

Had I experienced the following when I was a boy, I don’t know what would have become of me.

THREAD: Judge Ellis is the first federal judge to review extensive body cam video of DHS's actions in Chicago. She finds that DHS *repeatedly* misled the public and made claims that were disproven by agents' own videos.

I'll go through some of the most egregious ones here.

With news of Chi Ossé challenging Hakeem Jeffries this year, you may be wondering—

• Why are Zohran + AOC against the idea?
• Why is this even being debated in NYC-DSA?

If you read this piece by Paul Engler, you'll get why. But here's my TLDR take.🧵

there's a lovely James C. Scott line about how "the same mechanisms can be used to track cholera or round up Jews"
Bureaucracy is essential to freedom, it’s just hard to see this because not only can it enable tyranny, the mechanisms that make freedom possible superficially resemble tyranny as well. Postal services and secret police alike keep standardized registries of the names and homes of the citizenry.
Look it's weird to say "the city is liberation. Bigness is liberation. Bureaucracy is liberation." But it so often is. The village is inherently tyrannical. Sherly Jackson knew this.

I will say again that it has been just *beyond* hammered home for me that not only do we not live in a meritocracy, we live in an economic and sociopolitical order that actively rewards avarice, incompetence, unkindness, dishonesty.

And tbh that makes me feel better about my lack of success.
I love mess but man this whole thing underlines how much it sucks that all the worst journalists somehow end up with flashy high-paying media jobs
