DOCTOR: I told him he needed to get out to a show, that was how he would cure his depression.

CHOTINER: So you learned this technique in school?

DR: No, not— listen it was good advice. Pagliacci was in town.

C: Right. Is it standard to give advice before learning a patient’s name?

DR: Now look

So so dangerous....

MBIE has announced the board members of Research Funding New Zealand, the new org that will make funding decisions for NZ's "major public investments in science, innovation and technology"

My initial response: 😬🤔🙄WTF

Why are three of them Aus-based? Why such a strong Agri lean? ⚛️🧪👩‍🔬

good riddance to Minister Judith Collins, who orchestrated the present gutting of New Zealand's science funding establishment

I've not seen or heard any coverage today that mentions this tiny detail, affecting 100s of millions of public dollars and endangering NZ's entire intellectual community
Judith Collins resigns after a near quarter century in politics
She has been in Parliament for more than 20 years, as the MP for Clevedon, and then Papakura.

By cancelling the Climate Emergency Response Fund, the government was telling us there was nothing to see here. The past week has shown they could not have been more wrong. We need a government that takes climate change seriously because it's only going to get worse. #nzpol
We had funding for these types of actions. It was the Climate Emergency Response Fund but the government closed that in 2024 so now there is no dedicated funding to prepare for future floods, slips, fires and other climate disasters www.treasury.govt.nz/information-...

stop using AI to do your research. it hallucinates too often. if you want an answer to something, post something arrogant on the appropriate subreddit. something like: "this item performs 10% better than everything else. only idiots deny this." this will bait nerds into doing your research for you.

And, for anyone like me who is a New Zealander living overseas, if you have been back to NZ at any point in the last 3 years, you are eligible to enrol and vote in this election

(the extension of this provision to 6 years was for the 2023 election *only*)
As the date for Election 2026 has been announced (November 7), now is a good time to check if you are enrolled to vote, and to update your details if needed. vote.nz/enrolling/en... #election #decision2026 #nzPol

Great that Congress is funding, but exec orders and reorgs strengthening political control over the merit review process still seem to be place. If NIH is flat funded but funds are directed to re-evaluating the germ theory of disease in line with HHS leadership’s skepticism, win is quite limited
This is a HUGE win…and one that happened because we ~collectively~ said “NO!”

But AAAS coming in and saying on record to the NYT “Science is doing ok. Things are not bad at all…” is baffling.

If things are hard for you as a scientist, please share in the comments.

My first thought when scanning this article (which Emily also points out in this thread): there is a difference between "denialism" and "resistance" or even "criticism." Also hard to argue against a critique of "breathless claims from pundits and influencers" when none of those claims are cited...
Not sure why this dross, dated Dec 1, seems to be circulating now (and why it didn't cross my feed a month ago), but wow what a terrible essay.

The self-help craze sweeping the nation tells you to “let them.” If someone cuts you off in traffic, let them. If your friends are ignoring you, let them. If a popular self-help author plagiarizes your idea and turns it into a book, LET THEM.
