3/ They framed approach to public health as differing values. Rather the battle was always about upholding the principles of public health (as a collective public good we all contribute to) versus a constant onslaught that prized individualism and guarding individual privileges above all.

2/ But the truth is there‘s a direct line from then to now. Public health relies on a fundamental principle: it is collective. Instead all these experts, propped up wishy washy “You do you” health, and fueled the notion that the public had lost faith in public health.

🧵This needs to be said. There were many in ID who during Covid agreed along with the current leaders of NIH & FDA in their naysaying, and collaborated with them (remember urgency of normal?) who are now being quoted in the press saying, “By golly we don’t agree now!” www.nytimes.com/2025/07/17/o...

My colleague @lakshmi-ganapathi.bsky.social says what no one else wants to say. There were infectious disease doctors, public health leaders, who paved the way for the current moment, though they'll deny it all now.

This is why I’m pushing for a state escrow account that holds federal funds before sending them on to Washington. If Trump wants to steal our tax dollars that were legally appropriated by Congress, then we should just be paying ourselves.
“Minnesota, New York, California, Illinois and Colorado will be cut off from around $7 billion in funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, which provides cash assistance to households with children, according to two people familiar with the matter.”

Monstrously cruel.

five years ago the president of the united states incited an insurrection in order to try to retain power and it is a comprehensive failure at every level - media, law enforcement, courts, politicians and most of all the voters - that he has returned to power and threatens the stability of the world

NEW: Five years after the Jan. 6 insurrection, it's clear that the attack on our Constitution was not a single event. Trump returned to office without being held accountable for his actions.

Now is the time to enact the reforms that are necessary to reverse the damage done. Read our full letter:
Five years on from January 6th, Congress must protect against President Trump's attacks on democracy - CREW | Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington
We must learn from the January 6th attack on the Capitol, and Congress must act to protect our country from President Trump’s continued siege against democracy and our Constitution.

i watched colin powell's un speech in 2003 while i sat on an apple crate in my crappy boston apartment while working at a mortgage company. i immediately said "this is bullshit" and then i watched all these dc based reporters and pundits say "this is a compelling case"

it was a red pill moment
i learned this because when i started blogging about american politics i was able to observe what the fuck was going on in washington from boston and los angeles without needing to rub my head up against dc voices. they didnt know anything more right in the middle of it than we knew from far.

Paul Farhi's full quote:

"The fact that the Pentagon’s officially approved “press” corps hasn’t reported a single story of importance since it was created isn’t a surprise. It’s working exactly as it was designed."

True.

MAGA media is a negation of journalism dressed as an alternative press corp.

It is going to be hard fucking work, including because there are a looooot of people who benefit from being able to say "oh well what are your choices? it's me or the fascist."

That gives them a perverse incentive to not eradicate fascism.

The lesson of January 6th is that it does absolutely no good to prosecute the the violent foot soldiers if you're not going to prosecute the leaders and hold them accountable for their sedition under the full force of the law.

if you arent fighting fascists then the fascists are winning. im happy to fight in any way possible so fascism doesnt win.
I hear from folks a big hurdle in this method is the urge to feel like the "good guys" & playing crass games compromises "our principles" the then why should ppl trust "us" over "them". They don't like thinking the ends justify the means. Thoughts?

It's fucking easy to say "oh Trump is insane" or "oh it's because he's X" or "oh it's because he's Y" because then you don't need to grapple with the reality: we have so many fascists right now because the conditions in this country allowed fascism to flourish.
