If I ever run for office in LA my platform will be that if you get caught using a phone in your car by anyone. Pedestrian, other drivers, anyone at all, they destroy your phone and your car and you have to walk on the 10 and the 405
We’ve 100% lost the war on using phones while driving and it’s the worst.

It’s almost impossible to measure what people prefer in an environment where all kinds of factors influence where and how people live. There’s also an obvious absence of choice in most of the country. I’d warn against saying any evidence is all-caps overwhelming one way or the other.
Right, this is true, but the OVERWHELMING evidence of the past 100 years of American life is that vastly more people want space and a car than a smaller unit and a car-free lifestyle. This is mostly why the suburban share of US population has grown relentlessly for the entire 20th and 21st century
Some people put a premium on space in my experience, others put a premium on not having to have a car and not being isolated out in the suburbs

I was approached by a lady outside the gym today while parking my bike. She was likely in her 70s. She had such great questions about the bike and then proceeded to tell me about her ebike.

She told me that she rode over 600 miles on it last year and was so proud of herself. She was so happy.

when a motorist does this, they are asking that i cede control over my choice over when to enter the intersection, without having the power to ensure that it’s safe to enter. it’s better for everyone just to drive predictably.
Drivers: I know you think you’re doing cyclists a favour by stopping & waving us through an intersection while you’ve got right of way, but you really aren’t. You’re being unpredictable and screwing up the flow of traffic for everyone and just causing further delays for us to safely cross. Stop it.

How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

Yep. The Anschutz family, a rich Republican billionaire family whose politics could be summarized as “hating cities,” is getting preferential treatment from the Mayor and the City for a project on Alameda.
“It is more holistically just speaking to the fact that money speaks & if you have enough money you can get what you want effectively,” he said. “I associated that more with national politics & less of local regional neighborhood type endeavors or politics or projects.”

City changes Alameda road diet plans after backlash (including from an Anschutz)

Frontline DOTI people are trying to do good and their leaders continue to fail them and the city
We are incredibly disappointed DOTI and the Mayor caved into the interest of a wealthy Denver family for the Alameda safety project, yet again following their pattern of watering down road safety projects when people with connections complain.

Sorry, but a lack of support for autonomous vehicles is not among Sec Pete's biggest missed opportunities at USDOT.

For instance:
🔹 Failure to stop Tesla from lying about Autopilot, FSD, etc
🔹 Failure to curb car bloat
🔹 Continuing to spend fed $$ on highway expansions that won't fix congestion

It's important to practice the little conversations, so you can be ready for the big ones
there’s a thing here about for the last decade or so, online people have been very negative about small talk - the weather, or local news, or whatever - and small talk is the grease that keeps physical interactions going, and i am tired of ceding that to shut-ins
i say thank you to the bus driver when i get on and yell thank you when i get off every day i ride the bus, and i take two buses to and from work, being nice and friendly costs you nothing and should be your default expectation for yourself because it improves your day and everyone else’s day

an example of what we mean when we talk about “car brain”: presupposing that every description of streets and street usage (i.e. traffic) is about cars and cars only.

every time someone tells me that “traffic was terrible today” i stifle the urge to reply “you mean CAR traffic was terrible today.”
Just had the mind melting argument raised that “bus lanes and bike lanes block streets” and it’s like, um, you see all those bikes zipping past you when you’re stuck in traffic behind other cars? You see how they’re moving? Yeah. So they don’t block streets. They move people efficiently.

Very frustrating to still see public campaigns like this from Delta PD telling kids to wear bright reflectors on their costumes and people to leave their bikes at home.

The risk to pedestrians on Halloween comes from drivers, not cyclists.
