In a normal democracy, a total collapse of party leadership would result in an no-confidence vote and immediate snap elections to find leaders who can lead

Great points. The Democrats focus grouped empty platitudes and technocratic talking points couldn't be further from what voters respond to in this modern media environment.

I helped make a film, out this week, called “Rovina’s Choice,” about the deaths this man without conscience or accountability has caused — already 600,000, ⅔ of them children.

A large faction of institutional New York Jews — seemingly as part of their effort to torpedo Mamdani over insufficient deference to Israel — worked themselves into a frothing panic over the prospect of him winning, and are now in full screaming meltdown about it

So struck by the case Mamdani's triumph makes for the value of Africana/post-colonial studies. His moral vision & approach to politics clearly shaped by both lived experience as an African/S. Asian immigrant & by a theory of that experience—ideas central to his parents' work too ofc. Education, man

Every Democratic mayor and governor should say this.

Should have been said for months.

ICE AGENTS will be held ACCOUNTABLE.
Mamdani: "My message to ICE agents & to everyone across this city is that everyone will be held to the same standard of the law. If you violate it, you must be held accountable. There is sadly a sense growing that certain people are allowed to violate that law, whether they be POTUS or ICE agents."

100 percent accurate
The obsessive wokeness panic is about elite labor market competition and prestige. People use a lot of fancy words to obscure this, and offer some substantive criticisms as well, but that’s ultimately its driving force.

I think Dick Cheney’s death today highlighted this divide.

The Democrats who still say shit like “reach across the aisle” and praise evil people are playing to a political audience that no longer exists.

Mamdani wasn’t cruel to Cuomo in a Trumpism style, but he didn’t concede anything either.
I love that Zohran did not praise Cuomo in his speech. You absolutely do not have to say nice things about bad people. We should normalize that in “polite” politics: Praising bad people is not actually “civility.”

basically every 2024 truism is dead. Trump did not build a lasting multiracial coalition or turn young men into committed Republicans. You don’t need to cave on trans rights to win. The pundits have nothing left to tell you.

Zohran Mamdani says on NY1 he didn't get a congratulatory call from either Andrew Cuomo or Eric Adams last night.

He says he got a congratulatory call from Curtis Sliwa, though.

I wrote this in June and the disgusting way since then that Cuomo and the oligarchs have been willing to tear the social fabric of the city apart to stop him has only made it more true and Zohran’s victory more thunderous.

Next we stop ICE.

It's not "exclusively because of his background" though. It's because Mamdani supports both a populist economic agenda and Palestinian self-determination, and Schumer, like nearly all the elites in the party he leads, is owned—mind, body, and soul—by corporate donors and AIPAC.
I had thought most of my naive idealism had been stomped out of me by now, but it’s amazing to me that this level of public animosity could be directed by Democratic leadership toward a sweet and personable young candidate of their own party seemingly exclusively because of his background.
Q: It's election day in NYC. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: "Look, I voted, and I look forward to working with the next mayor to help NYC."

Seems telling how instead of taking policy neutral lessons from Mamdani--e.g., people like big ideas, politicians who project integrity, retail politics still matters, etc.--centrists are bending themselves into pretzels trying to argue there is nothing to see here at all
