Great find. Brief item in the Chicago Defender (5/8/20) suggests that a.) Carpenter may have barnstormed AME churches w/this sermon—or at very least delivered it more than once, i.e. in Chicago as well as Philly; and b.) the subject of the sermon was exactly what its title suggests.

Jokes aside, I have no patience for these clowns or those who indulge their bogeyman fears. NYC isn’t unsafe for Jews. It’s modestly less amenable to those whose sense of well-being is based on denying Palestinians’ humanity & who wish to glide thru life w/out hearing a different opinion on the subj

There’s definitely an interesting story here. But if you’re gonna make sweeping claims, pathologizing tens of thousands (or hundreds of thousands?) of people as “spiritually unmoored and socially stunted”(!!!), I’m not sure “more than a dozen interviews” cuts it, methodologically speaking

I know we're not supposed to talk about Woody Allen, but ANNIE HALL is one of the supreme American movies & Diane Keaton's wild charisma is 90% of the reason why. And btw her performance of "Seems Like Old Times" is pure magic—up there with the greatest musical scenes in cinema, zero doubt

Patricia Lockwood, how do you organize your library? And would you say your system is sound, from an engineering perspective?

Yep. Cf. this email I got yesterday from Zeteo. I happen to share Medhi Hassan’s politics but find this clickbait language alienating—insulting to everyone’s intelligence & dignity. Don’t like living in a zero sum hot take world

Hardly the main problem w/Ezra Klein's piece but: "When the left thought its hold on the hearts & minds of college students was nearly absolute..." Uh this never happened in real life, it's pure whole cloth invention, & what's more there's no entity called "the left" capable of collective thought

The Le Nains! Fascinating painters, love 'em. Another great one, The Resting Horseman (c.1640)—typically strange/stagy composition in which the figures appear to have been airdropped into a landscape from alien worlds & arranged for our inspection while refusing to acknowledge each other's presence
