… and The Onion had no choice but to admit it was bested by reality and shut down.
The attorney general and the FBI director, a manosphere podcaster bro, pulled into the situation room a member of Congress best known for getting kicked out of a Beetlejuice musical for drunkenly giving her date a handy, in order to pressure her about the president's child sex trafficking scandal.

yeah my most out there technology and crime belief that be implemented is if we can mandate new cars have backup cameras we can mandate they have ignition interlock devices. the first time you get caught driving over the limit it gets turned on. extremely doable technological non-carceral solution.
There was a DUI diversion program (Montana? Dakota?) that required 3 a day breathalizer that was more or less a wild success. If you miss check in, you get an overnight in county. Apparently this had effects on *all cause* mortality.

Once they were in the shutdown though they could have made it about anything. Put clips of ICE abducting children on endless loop and say “do we keep funding a govt that does *that*?” Then you might get federal workers clamoring not for concessions but a strike.

Again, requires believing in things.
This was a doomed exercise from the outset. They picked a fight to give the GOP something they thought they would want anyway, and have now been embarrassed into capitulating on even that. Beyond pathetic.

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

Four years ago my baby spent two days on a ventilator because RSV put him into respiratory failure. His little brother got immunized, so when he had RSV it was just like a moderate cold.
people can buy more stuff today than ever before, more or less. compared to more than 3-4 years ago and it’s not even close. we are vastly wealthier on average now than even within near living memory

Mamdani embodies a pro-Palestinian politics that truly distinguishes between the state of Israel and the Jewish people, and truly takes antisemitism seriously as its own problem. That makes him a threat to those who want to absolutely conflate antisemitism and anti-Zionism, whether the ADL or WoL.
The pro-Palestine group Within Our Lifetime has already decided that Zohran Mamdani has sold out the pro-Palestine cause... by condemning swastikas drawn on a Jewish day school in Brooklyn. forward.com/culture/7822...
Mamdani's first statement on antisemitism as mayor-elect got some weird pushback
After someone spraypainted a swastika on a yeshiva, Zohran Mamdani condemned antisemitism. Somehow, this generated conspiracy theories.

Reminder that Republicans don't really believe in religious liberty. Religion is a tool for enhancing their political power, and any expression of faith to the contrary must be suppressed.

virtue signalling is good actually
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

Dems need to start talking more about how Trump’s dementia means that he can’t distinguish his fantasies from reality. He has completely lost touch with the real world and only knows what his sycophantic courtiers are telling him.
Trump: "If you look at affordability, which they campaigned on, they lied. Because they talked about 'Oh, prices are up' -- no, prices are down under the Trump administration and they're down substantially."

Is there ever going to be an interviewer who pushes back and tells him that immigrants seeking asylum is different than insane asylums?
O'DONNELL: Are we going to war against Venezuela?

TRUMP: I doubt it. They emptied their mental institutions and insane asylums into the United States of America

The Islamophobia that has emerged in this mayoral campaign has been truly deplorable. And the fact that so much of it has been in the name of ostensibly protecting me as a Jew both fills me with shame and also makes me feel exploited.
Mamdani: "The bigger question is whether we are willing to say goodbye to ... anti-Muslim sentiment that has grown so endemic in our city that when we hear it, we know not whether the words were spoken by a Republican or a Democrat."

The whole Platner defense seems to amount to, if someone is wearing swastika armband but then take it off and claim they were wearing it by mistake, you must immediately embrace them. And if you have lingering suspicions, don’t you think you’re being just a bit whiny and neurotic?
