Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are only going to get more competitive now that they both are focusing on the moon, columnist Tim Higgins writes.

Not necessarily quibbling or arguing with Jessica here, but: I think we need to reckon with what it means when a story like this is “good”

Because I think we can’t use that word in the same way that we do when we’re evaluating writing done by an actual human being making human choices

Yes, which is what anyone who gave it five seconds’ thought has been saying for freaking years now
OpenAI ”acknowledged in its own research that LLMs will always produce hallucinations due to fundamental mathematical constraints that cannot be solved through better engineering, marking a significant admission from one of the AI industry’s leading companies.”

You can’t trust chatbots.
OpenAI admits AI hallucinations are mathematically inevitable, not just engineering flaws
In a landmark study, OpenAI researchers reveal that large language models will always produce plausible but false outputs, even with perfect data, due to fundamental statistical and computational limi...

Let me just make a few little adjustments to that title…

“How a scientist with a PhD in Geology and 25 years of experience is helping lead California’s earthquake work”

Way to devalue my experience.

the single most celebrated holiday in the world is various countries observing a national holiday to mark when they kicked the English out
I thought disliking the English was the shared culture for all the world’s people

Within these words are the essence of why I’ve hated the Clintons since roughly 1994.
Hillary Clinton: "More people were deported under my husband and Barack Obama without killing American citizens and without putting children into detention camps than were in the first Trump term or this first year of Trump's second term."

Ah, the time of arrogance is passing, the time of throwing each other under the bus is rising. Glorious to behold
TAPPER: There were prosecutors in Minnesota who were going to investigate the shooting Renee Good and then the word came down from DOJ to stop

HOMAN: That's a question for DOJ. That happened before I had my feet on the ground in Minnesota. That's a question for Pam Bondi or Todd Blanche

What I can’t understand is that I got a drawing tablet recently and how is it that I’m not already making brilliant art?

I will never stop screaming at the fecklessness of the Dems in this critical time, but that doesn’t change that I can’t conceive of how the GOP can continue as a political party after all this.

Much of the damage trump has done is not because he was flexing his power but because a host of other institutions ceded theirs, and there’s gonna need to be a reckoning on that front too

Something I like to do is turn on a Netflix show that looks interesting but that I know was inexplicably canceled after one season and enjoy it immensely and then seethe when it is over and mourn such a missed opportunity.

Netflix is happy to oblige me by constantly canceling good shit.

This is actually kinda serious. Ai is a dogshit technology but it also has the power to put the final nail in the coffin of the concept of a shared reality. When you can no longer trust any form of evidence, how can you ever know what’s real unless you directly witness it?

Here’s what amuses me. This is obviously a blatant attempt by the media to vilify the Dems over this. But, defunding ICE is hugely popular now and as we’ve seen over and over the party in power is overwhelmingly blamed for shutdowns. So really this is the best press the Dems could be getting.
Once again, it is bizarre how the media seems to think that only Democrats have agency.
Note the framing here:

It’s “Democrats have refused to fund” DHS and not “Republicans refused to prohibit face masks” or “the two parties could not agree on how to reform the agency.”

So

I was reading a piece a few years ago and one of the things it mentioned was how the early merchant class shaped politics and business hundreds of years ago.

The premise was that it was an era of kings and royalty, but the actual power was merchants.

I think about that a lot these days

Someone should ask the Speaker of the House what he thinks about Trump's giant fuck you to the Congress.
Trump: “The Democrats refuse to vote for Voter I.D., or Citizenship. The reason is very simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections. This was not what our Founders desired … There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!“

And then did every 3rd grade teacher’s life become fractionally more difficult.
Photo history you should know. 😄
In the late 1930s, Henry Ruschmann patented a high-speed machine for cutting photographic prints, which produced small, glossy cellulose “schnibbles” as waste. His employees took these fragments home to use as artificial snow, and glitter was born.

Kind of wish more folk would frame art and creativity as being a bit like running in their heads or something.

Is everyone naturally brilliant at it? No. If you work at it will you improve? Yes you probably will! If you don’t get good is it still worthwhile? Yeah! Can an LLM do it for you? Nope.
