Jersey. Regrettably a lawyer. Angry all the time. Trans rights/equality/safety are non-negotiable issues full stop. Stand by them or lose democracy.

I'd kill for some good reporting on the sort of lack of unity we see among the left (Mamdani and AOC both discouraging Chi Ossé from challenging Jeffries) that's just comes from a good faith and rigorous understanding of how prominent figures in this movement operate, the advantages they calculate.

Dealer René Gimpel recalled Monet’s palette piled with “snowy peaks” of lead white.

Unlike earlier painters who worked from dark grounds, Monet painted outward from luminosity. One artist said: “He paints as if light itself were his medium.”

It’s much easier to be right wing in this world. You can destroy things. Assault people. Kill people. Wreck economies. Appeal to people base emotions in blaming the other guy for the things you’ve destroyed/assaulted/killed/wrecked. It’s easy.

there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

At risk of flogging a dead horse: this whole letter is a reminder that the creative process is an end in and of itself, and vital to self-actualisation. You can’t experience BECOMING, as he puts it, by outsourcing it to ChatGPT.
In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice.

KURT VONNEGUT - born 103yrs ago today - was the only one to respond.

His reply was a doozy.

Found the tweet that Joyce Carol Oates bodied Elon Musk with and it's so beautiful in its eloquent, simple take down. So much so he's crashing out trying to prove he reads books now. Put this in the Louvre.

This does call for primarying every Dem senator. I would be willing to believe, as a first term senator @andykimnj.bsky.social bears little blame for all this. Still the Senate Dems failure in March and now this chickenshit nonsense calls for an end to all their careers. Primary every Dem.

I been saying I don't think Republicans are uniquely capable of creative legal thinking

personally I would like to see more 'if you wanna act funny, I can act hilarious'-type legal arguments in furtherance of good things

For decades the political commentary class claimed moving right was inevitable. That it was a noble retreat from detached ivory tower elitism. Where race and LGBTQ issues were fun sci-fi hobbies but not representative of the vox populi. Bullshit. But I think there's reason to be cautious here too.
basically every 2024 truism is dead. Trump did not build a lasting multiracial coalition or turn young men into committed Republicans. You don’t need to cave on trans rights to win. The pundits have nothing left to tell you.

There were millions of dollars spent on anti-trans ads in NJ and VA. Anyone care to comment on those campaigns getting blown out, since we were told trans issues lost Democrats the election in 2024?
so where are the op-eds about republican overreach today? where’s the commentary about donald trumps war against american citizens or his terror campaign targeting brown people? where’s the pearl clutching over the conservative social media bubble reliant on nazi propagandists?

Not only have establishment Democrats failed in this moment but some of the most prominent figures of the left from 2016 are also failing astoundingly. Stand for something. Stand for something. Goddamnit stand for something.

Society can survive or this can happen. Not both.
From an article about the man in the SS uniform arrested for attacking the woman in Georgia. Just wild that we've accepted that there's a huge social media platform where an account called "@GasChambers" is allowed to openly do Nazi fundraising and that's fine, in fact all the reporters post there.

the last few years of my job at google were surreal -- watching the executives talk in increasingly positive terms about Elon Musk's management style while objective metrics at his companies were becoming dangerously unstable. it wasn't until 2023 that i realized that they didn't care about profits.
