They received my small fire. They’re not copying me. They’re not trying to be me. They have this fire, and they light up their own. And they’ll probably give that to someone else. There were legendary comic book artists when I was a boy. One of the greatest things about Battletech is the rock solid stability of the rules. My 1989 box set rule book is almost the same as the A Game of Armored Combat rule book. 40 years of rules stability is kind of an epic achievement only Call of Cthulhu and Battletech have succeeded at.

The reason generative AI is so popular with wannabe creatives is best illustrated by something every pro writer has encountered: getting pitched an idea by someone saying "You write it and we'll split the profits!" because they think the idea is what has value, not the writing. If you can explain how your magic system works I will look at you side eye because if you understand how it works it is called science not magic
one of the hardest things is to write magic that has an internal logic *without* sounding like a character build guide. that logic can be emotional, spiritual (like Tolkien), symbolic, but it has to underpin the telling *even if it can't be sharply defined by the teller*.
when people ask me "how the magic system works" I tend to get defensive because the truth is I really don't know and it's not important, I don't even know how the washing machine works but guess what it still cleans clothes. as a novelist my domain is lies and frippery
