London based filmmaker working on folk horror, weird shit, punk sci-fi satire and stuff that exudes a cosmic darkness. Progressive humane human. Obsessed with phantasmagoria, perpetually dreich. Sometimes a numpty, always the odd one out. He/him.
Third viewing of Frankenstein tonight. So that's once on IMAX (looked GORGEOUS) and twice on Netflix (image much diminished and flat). There's been a lot of talk about the Netflix look recently, how everything looks bland, washed out and uncinematic. I think I've figured out what it is.

Bluesky suspended Sarah Kendzior today for no reason whatsoever. She just shared excerpts of her articles, which were as always incisive and not offensive at all. Hey @pfrazee.com this is super not OK. I know her- we've interacted a fair bit via chats and her work is essential.

This makes me think of Wandering Earth and Wandering Earth 2, which are both propaganda for the idea that Chinese leadership will better serve the globe in the scenario where it is under catastrophic threat from climate change
"Oil demand and emissions in the transport sector fell by 5% in the third quarter, but grew elsewhere by 10%, as the production of plastics and other chemicals surged."
#China is cutting oil demand in transport. Has that ever happened in Western countries?

Analysis: China’s CO2 emissions have now been flat or falling for 18 months - Carbon Brief
China’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were unchanged from a year earlier in the third quarter of 2025, extending a flat or falling trend that started in March 2024.

The democrats voted to destroy what’s left of the judiciary last night btw.
"The provision, tucked into a measure to fund the legislative branch, appears to immediately allow for eight GOP senators to sue over their phone records being seized in the course of the investigation by Jack Smith ... into the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021." www.nytimes.com/2025/11/10/u...
Spending Bill Would Pave Way for Senators to Sue Over Phone Searches
Republicans have voiced outrage that Jack Smith looked at G.O.P. lawmakers’ phone records surrounding the Jan. 6 attack. Legislation to reopen the government would allow them to sue for $500,000 each.

The far right are everywhere these days and will tolerate no dissent. We're going to have to build our own media ecosphere, our own newspapers, video sharing portals, online media and social spaces. These places are no longer safe places for progressives, if indeed they ever were.
In a rare case of Substack notes usefulness, I just learned that Sarah Kendzior (author of They Knew and a brilliant writer) got bounced from Bluesky. What the hell? new @sarahkendzior.bsky.social

Labour are going to drag the tormented, insane spirit of Oswald Mosley up from hell for the BBC Director General job. It's official.

Yes, there are more pressing matters tonight but actually this is all part of the same problem. We are seeing a handful of corporations that now own everything but are starting to consume themselves during the death throes of late stage capitalism. So they cut and reduce and diminish standards.
This is a Netflix promo for a Netflix film on a channel run by Netflix and the sound is terrible because they are using a shitty influencer grade mic, capturing terrible sound that need to be heavily cleaned up in post. Ten years ago you would have used a 416 or something. Standards are decaying.

Also, I'm loving the respect bestowed upon Blade II's name in this interview. It's become the height of fashion to shit on this important, foundational work of comic book mayhem and I won't stand for it.
Just seen this interview. When talking about the CEO of Netflix, GDT says "Let's see if we can get him to the Mountains". I wish he had other options beyond the tepid home cinema of a lacklustre streamer but I'm happy he's still keen on making Mountains of Madness.

This is what every day was like in the 90s. Hatred, testosterone, male entitlement and a chocolate box view of the past. Why are we returning to this just because Keir Starmer and Farage are ordering us to do so?
