London based filmmaker working on folk horror, weird shit, punk sci-fi satire and stuff that exudes a cosmic darkness. Progressive humane human. Obsessed with phantasmagoria, perpetually dreich. Sometimes a numpty, always the odd one out. He/him.
The hubris of a corporation. No wonder people are souring on what Netflix has to offer. It looks shit by design.

As I mentioned, the sodding iPlayer from the cash strapped and near ruined BBC offers up a better quality image than the worlds most successful and popular streamer. It should be the first thing they get right.

It ridiculous that they forked out $120 million for a beautifully crafted work from one of our most celebrated creatives only to insist upon severely impairing the image they brought into the universe with a dull grade just to suit the flaws in their own system which they have no interest in fixing.

It's maddening that a visual maestro like del Toro has to deliberately neuter their own work, just to facilitate the limitations of a lacklustre format within a company that increasingly sees art as an asset to be exploited rather than something that should be respected.

... I have to conclude that it's not a limitation of the streaming format but rather a choice by Netflix not to improve their video tech to be as good as, say, the BBC's iplayer. We know it's not a question of money, especially so with the above example, rather a lack of will.

Frankenstein looked amazing on the big screen, but the muted, greyed image on Netflix does reduce the effect of the film considerably. As other streamers do not have this problem (I was just watching some Wolf Hall on Iplayer and that has some gorgeous pools of deep, black dark in its imagery)...

Cinematic imagery is often high contrast, with a wide tonal range between the darkest and brightest points. This creates stunning images that really leap off the screen at you, creating the desired filmic effect that cinema can provide.

The Netflix video codec does not handle areas of deep black very well compared to other streamers. So in order to preserve image detail, the areas that should be a deep, strong black are actually a dark grey. This leaves the image looking like it's faded, lacking contrast and flat.

What the hell @support.bsky.team? @Sarahkendzior.bsky.social is one of our most important writers and thinkers. What is the deal? Why is she suspended?

Exquisite. Almost edible, which given what they contain is highly problematic.

Musk and others have been banging on for ages about the need to eliminate 80% of the world's population in order to make it feasible to sustain their positions. Is this all part of their insane plan?

Earl grey during the day. Lapsang souchong for the night. Peppermint or green tea just before I go to bed. Honey cinnamon chai is always a welcome treat though.
