Oster is short for epidemiologist imposter.
I took another read this through that Emily Oster piece that appeared in the NYT yesterday and what really jumped out at me on a second read is that she's recommending that public health authorities back away from their current advice about raw milk as a kind of tradeoff to promote vaccines.

🪲 Cochineal, tiny insects that live on prickly pear cacti, powered a global red dye trade and transformed European fashion. The Spanish Crown built a monopoly for control of its production, but Tlaxcalteca growers weren't giving in without a fight.

A gentle reminder that refreshing social media can feel like you're taking action by staying on top of "the latest", but it mostly is a time sink. Sometimes it can provide ideas for how to take action! Do one of those. Or many! And then allow yourself (or force yourself) to stop hitting refresh.
Take an action step today. Well, everyday, really, but today is a really good day for it. We fight the horrors by persisting and doing and acting. And, as a bonus, taking action can help your mental state combat the horror, as well.

Take an action step today.

current read 📚☕️

the intro & halfway through ch 1 already made me silently crash out, so i put the book down & went outside to touch grass with my dogs.

anna gifty mentioned jessica’s book in her double tax book, so i will be comparing notes since they discuss women’s underpaid & unpaid labor.

Nice little January thaw ahead. Nothing exceptional but certainly milder than it's been. Boston hasn't had 4 straight 40F+ days since November!

Other countries have social safety nets. The US has women.
<whispers> what if the real "childcare fraud" is that they don't want women to work outside the home? 🤔

Oh this thread made me extremely happy and also slightly angry
I have a long-running list of surprising eponyms, and in this dark time I wish to share my amusement with you.

To clarify, an eponym is something named for a person. “Newton’s Laws” are called that for Isaac Newton. A surprising eponym is just that.

So, let’s begin.

Have any of my peeps on here done an at-home in-arm glucose monitor? I just got started as part of trying to sort out why I get occasional unpleasant drops in blood sugar. Would love to hear others' experiences with this thing, as I find the constant stream of data a little disorienting.

Kind of wild that once a month by body basically falls apart and I’m in pain either with headache or cramps or both and yet I still need to continue to function as if I’m not in pain.

So, the Bills definitely have their Shout song. It seems many teams use Seven Nation Army.
And in the past few years, Bills are all in on Mr. Brightside.
Does every NFL team have a hokey song that local media uses endlessly throughout the season and on hyper mode if the team makes the playoffs? I don't mean a team fight song, but a bad hype song? It's not even 11 AM and I've heard the Steelers song ("Here We Go") five times already today.
