Please read this excellent piece by @qjurecic.bsky.social.

Numbers don't capture the chilling effect on free expression or those excluded or deported we will never hear about in the news.

Appreciate her reaching out to me to discuss how the past can inform the present. 🗃️ @harvardpress.bsky.social
Over the last 10 months, the federal government has cracked down on political expression with a persistence and viciousness reminiscent of some of the darkest periods of U.S. history. Welcome to the Third Red Scare.

I can't even remember the photos of govt abuse and trauma from last week
Remember 25 years ago when a photo was taken of a fed pointing a gun at a crying refugee child and the image was so shameful it dominated the news cycle for a year

That’s because even after nine years Jake Tapper hasn’t caught on to the whole “every accusation is a confession” thing.

Bro this is how Trump primes his base for his own corruption.

you guys I just found a book and it says everything the president is gonna do it’s called project 2025 and it’s wild.

Sorry that people are confusing this for gibberish. It isn’t.

He’s saying they are going to kill off the ACA, all of the protections it includes, and all-but eliminate Medicaid.
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

The minimalist position is to prosecute people who, right out in the open, deliberately and illegally destroyed the federal government and ruined millions of lives.
Your periodic reminder that it’s really really really important to say that members of ICE are going to prosecuted for crimes they commit.

They know they are breaking the law.

You might be surprised by how quickly some of these cowards will react if they know they could face legal consequences.

“Everyone be quiet I’m trying to drive and you’re distracting me”

we’re trying to tell you that the bridge is out up ahead and you’re going to drive us off a cliff.
The sooner we get past internal recriminations and back to fighting united, the better off we all are — the likelier our victory next November.

Dem leaders:
People don’t care about fascism, they care the cost of healthcare.

Also Dem leaders:
Republicans say if we help them now, they promise to think about not permanently making healthcare even more expensive than it was before.

Imagine living in a fantasy where you readily accept stories like this as plausible.

Same for when they claim that entire fields of technology are, for common sense reasons, utterly inoperable. Like if thousands of engineers all working on solar panels for decades forgot about night.
Trump: "They had hundreds of countries, companies working on it and they were spending billions of dollars and when they turned it on it didn't work. That's why you had a helicopter crashing into an airplane. If we had a great system, bells and whistles would've started going off."

You all have, by now, said or heard something to the effect of “if you ever wondered what you would’ve done in 30s Europe, it’s now.”

Well, how do you feel about the Centre Party Reichstag members who voted for the enabling act in 1933? What if they said they’d gotten strong assurances from Hitler?
The democrats didn’t just give up leverage and millions of Americans healthcare they voted for expressly illegal and corrupt actions by the administration and their colleagues. They literally are helping materially to dismantle American democracy.
None of these people can hold power anymore.

Abolish the Senate. I am absolutely dead serious.
Shaheen: "We've heard from a number of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle that they're willing to come to the table, they're willing to work with us once the govt is open to get this done. We've heard the same thing from the White House. So now we'll see if they're really gonna work w/us"

When the Conservative Party in Korea declared martial law, the Korean Democrats knew if they didn’t send them to hell there would be no opposition afterwards. And look at them. They’re taking the ex conservative president and ensuring he never breathes free ever again.

IMO the absolutely vital reason to transform the Democratic Party is so that, once we're back in power, we actually do the radical stuff that needs doing so we don't just end up right back here again

The party leaders who said “don’t talk about fascism, talk about health insurance costs” so much that everyone was mocking them are now caving to Republicans on health insurance.

Do I have this right?
The original Dem demands were:
1) Permanent ACA subsidies
2) Medicaid funding restored
3) No more blank checks for the regime (rescission)

They dropped Medicaid immediately. Went silent on rescission. Cut back to 1 year of subsidies on Friday. And surrendered today.

The Senate Democrats!

Like I fucking said.
To repeat: I have studied a lot of cases of autocratization over the past 15 years. Wrote about them, taught about them, consulting about them.

I do not recall an opposition so apathetic, ignorant, and inept as the @democrats.org. They cling to their power, rather than fight for democracy. Shame.
