Feel like it’s a huge problem with modern arcade throwbacks, where they’re really solid in their foundations, but just not nearly hard enough. So many of these games are in a big need of some juiced up difficulty.

Souls devs give you a game, and know that there is a non 0% chance that THIS is the game a bunch of players will experience,with no easy mode stuff.They are completely fine with it because they know that their game is fun when its at its most difficult. It's a subtle distinction, but it's meaningful

I feel like a lot of developers who look at Souls style "craft your own difficulty" approach are missing that Souls, in its neutral state, is at its most difficult. You unlock easy modes through exploration of the world & systems, you don't start with a piss easy game & look for challenge

On a related note, this is why "Roguelikes" are getting tired and annoying. Not only is it certain you won't win your first go around, it IS certain that you will win eventually even without changing your approach or learning new things about the game. This is a hell made of met expectations.

More writing/vids/etc. on game design should be treated as a piece of a convo rather than being seen as the final word or being seen as worthless & wrong. Feels like ppl only respond to stuff when it makes them mad, and no ideas get built on
