Since I'm new to bluesky - I'm working on ARMED DECOBOT, a game where throw dudes into dudes, my favorite thing in gaming. You also shoot & punch dudes, which are my other favorite things in gaming. It's a top down shmup/beat em up hybrid

This post's really funny but I think if we're being real the awesome part of gamedev is that it didn't kill my fun, it just made everything more extreme. Bad design is like nails on a chalkboard while great smart design is BLISS

Deflection against criticisms in action games (and maybe all games) can basically be summed up into 3 points which are repeated constantly in slightly different words :

1. Learn to deal with this flaw bro!
2. Old games have (a less extreme ver of) this flaw!
3. The flaw doesn't ALWAYS show up!

So many popular infinitely looping arcade games from the 80s devolve into multi hour long insane endurance marathons when played for score, so it's crazy to see that Elevator Action high score runs are like 40 min to an hour right now despite some damn good players taking a stab at scoring the game

If games are conversations then action games should be heated arguments. Instead more & more they're becoming one sided lectures

If you ever fall in love with an arcade game that doesn't fit into one of the small handful of existing big genres, prepare to spend the rest of your days being frustrated about the fact that nobody will ever make a successor to it or develop it in any way

Everyone's got opinions about how game design discussions should be handled properly, but if left to their own devices very few actually discuss anything of note and are happy to stagnate for decades.

It becomes really obvious how many arguments that gamers make in defense of x/y/z rely on attacking people's gamer cred & ego when you see em try pulling that shit against a rather uninvested normie gamer and seeing it all get effortlessly shrugged off 🧎

Wrote a post talking about the design of Shinobi, Rolling Thunder & Elevator Action and how excellent of a run n gun template it was+how it developed over the years. I'd love to see more indie games take a crack at developing this, cuz Shinobi devs sure as fuck won't

People tend to equate "modernized thing" with "new & unique thing", I don't think the 2 are the same, they're almost the exact opposite. Modernization is taking an old thing & applying known "modern stadandards" to it. Whereas a new & unique thing shapes those "modern standards" in its image

Sad that tank controls in action games are basically completely dead. I know they still exist in a handful of survival horror games but they don't really matter there cuz the games never test your precision & mechanics much to begin with

Rewatching Joyfuul videos and I think most #arcade players would get a kick out of it.

The whole "sandbox with few constraints lead to people mimicking for the sake of aesthetic while strict rules forces to create something unique" sound like something you could extract a lot of milleage.
They tested my MINECRAFT CIVILIZATIONS hypothesis…

haven't watched the vid yet but would like to say I really like how dmc2 secret missions just seem to scale forever (ng+ etc) so eventually you end up with combat encounters the game struggles to even render (2 arius who both spawn minions at once, etc). game and player both pushing it too far🫡

I think critics, devs, audiences should treasure & protect unintuitive genre abstractions. Like static cameras in survival horror games. The fact that its tied to a genre makes it a known language to players. & that's a beautiful thing cuz devs wont have to do the teaching every time they use it

This game's sick and costs basically nothing, check it out if you're a fan of action-puzzle stuff
Save 15% on シンゴウブレイカ SINGOU BREAKA on Steam
Look carefully at the red and blue signals, and DESTROY them. It's an eccentric action puzzle game where you destroy blocks modeled after pedestrian traffic lights.
