Arcade dork from Scotland. Playing, learning, scoring, investigating & generally messing about with arcade games of all genres since forever

"If it's not to your liking, there's like 499 other ACA games to pick from, try one of those"

Not untrue but also buy (or at least play) Space Invaders. Have you tried scoring it? Have you ever cleared more than 2-3 screens? Have you tried speed scoring?

I'm guessing no. It's more than you imagine
This week's Arcade Archives release, the 500th game, is Space Invaders. One shot at a time, take out the Invaders as they get closer and closer... Includes the black & white version with cellaphane / moon backdrop options and the colour version!

"and the unmistakable arcade punch of classic bullet-hell action"🤔

'with many bullets on-screen, Space Invaders was the original danmaku bullet-hell Ikaruga-like' - Every retro gaming serious historian youtuber in 10yrs time

Game would look fine if not for being full of gatcha shit

the immense complexity of Sengoku 3's special moves which amount to tapping down twice + A or B, or tapping down up + B when bigger characters are holding someone?

I hope Rushing Beat X becomes single plane too so I don't get confused having to walk up or down as that makes muh brain get hurty🤔
they were also surprised to see so much negative reaction to the inclusion of PK, so that's gone now

one of the director's big favs was Sengoku 3, & this game was intended to have a similar degree of fg-esque freedom, launchers, extended combos etc but with simpler controls & no fg-esque inputs

Pretty sure this stupid TV Game 'fad' will be over with soon claims 1979 newspaper

I wonder if they had a column covering the Arcade Archives release of Space Invaders this week or is 46yrs still in fad territory?

In next week's issue 'Are telephones here to stay?' & 'Shoes. Will they catch on?'

Space Invaders' program code was dated June '78 and the whole game fits into 6kb & it released into arcades in July '78. It was made by about 3 dudes & earned 900 bazillion dollars

AAA games are made by 1000s of people over many years, are 100+ Gigs & lose money

Useless, lazy shower of bastards🤔😉

You know that America was still a proper country in 1980 as you could just go to the shops & buy an official scoring guide for Space Invaders that contained actual facts & knowledge

Can you still do that today? No.

CLOBTA is a beast👑 When not being 1 of <4 people in history to have 1CC'd Grobda on defaults, he's kicking ass in the Caravans

I got 1 MVP this year, somehow finding myself mixed in with known god scorers like Dory, BIG, Mappi, QtQ, Marubaku GIL, Tsuyoshi, TBC etc

Middle-aged Scottish dork power💪🤔

Japan famous for having many unusual flavours of KitKats. To celebrate the Invader's 30th Anniversary in 2008 you could buy Space Invaders KitKats. I'm not sure if they tasted of aliens or not as I only bought an Invaders beach towel & a travel mug back then👾

Not much time to Caravan last night due to it being Xmas but I put some basic 'perfect' score patterns together to get the 300pt UFOs. No time to learn how to double the cycles for faster scores but 17th & best Westerner will do. CLOBTA took PS & NS. misorice took Xbox

Legit 11/10 Caravan. Try it

Taking a moment before festivities begin to focus on the true meaning of Xmas: playing arcade games in the modern era🤔

A big round of applause for Hamster. They make every week feel like Xmas Day for us fans of old arcade games

I look forward to playing the next 500 titles

Ham-chan...NICE PLAY!!!

Please buy physical games. The popularity of digital games, roms & ISOS in recent years has meant that Gamer Santa has had to cull much of his workforce to save costs. Only 2 reindeer remain. There's no other jobs at the North Pole & 10000 elves that should be wrapping gifts are currently unemployed

Less than 3 months later, what appears to be the 1st Invaders clone appeared. World Vending's 'World Invaders'

It's not a direct copy though. You can shoot more than one bullet & it's controlled with a dial. Also appears to be undumped & unknown outside of a few Jp players?

From my research (non-comprehensive) this would appear to be the 1st ever advert for Space Invaders, printed in the mid-August '78 issue of Game Machine
December 24, 2025 at 5:20 PM
As you'd expect there's many different screen modes B&W, colour, 3 cellophane overlays & the 3 lunar surface variants. The manual explains most of the details about UFOs & their non-random scores & there's preference options for shot count & UFO score displays, extra screen noise, stage number etc
What's great about Hamster is that they not only release well-known classics like Castle of the Dragon, Spinal Breakers, and Dacholer but they also release lesser-known oddities like Space Invaders.

It seems to be a copy version of the much more famous 'Cosmic Monster'? idk, no info available

It's true. He was spotted over Japan about an hour ago

It's been great to see so much celebration for Outfoxies 1st consumer port over this past week

Before it's time to celebrate Space Invaders, here's another piece of Outfoxies fan art that was published in Gamest

If you see this, post your favorite Final Fantasy character

Butz (& Boko). Just a guy minding his own business who ends up saving the world due to being in the wrong place at the right time & it seems like the right thing to do

A quick & fairly clumsy clear of The Outfoxies. Sometimes your patterns go wrong & you need to improvise & tbh, that's where much of The Outfoxies fun comes from

Ultimately all that matters is that you 'Kill your enemy by any means...'

Run-DMC have to stick to speedruns as they can't shmup

Last Resort's Hi-Score table is populated entirely by early hip-hop references:

Ice T
Public Enemy
Terminator X
MC Trouble
2 Live Crew
Boogie Down Productions
Zulu Nation
Mr Lee
West Street Mob

Breakers should have done the same thing tbh

I am allowed 1 free pass so if ever Hamster announces Dirt Fox, ported via AI that was powered by starving orphans being beaten to death using baby seals as clubs, I can buy it & you cannot yell at me
"Your Favorite Game Dev Is Probably Using AI"

not MY favorite game dev, they're all defunct
