So many popular infinitely looping arcade games from the 80s devolve into multi hour long insane endurance marathons when played for score, so it's crazy to see that Elevator Action high score runs are like 40 min to an hour right now despite some damn good players taking a stab at scoring the game

Infinite list. Nearly any good arcade platformer for starters. Think how Bionic Commando, a highly randomized, enemy focused, chaotic Fujiwara style platformer, was turned into an extremely static terrain focused NES platformer which then just became the identity of the series

I'm a lifelong fan of Contra games but they are kinda slop design wise, definitely some of the worst tendencies of run n guns as a series. They never developed their most dynamic elements (normal enemies, shooting + levels) & instead abandoned them for boss fights and set pieces.It's a series where-

Just homogenizes things too much. If you limit shooting directions that will naturally incentivize using movement to compensate for the player's limits (getting on the same floor for hori, getting above/below for verticals), whereas with diagonals u need to work x10 harder to incentivize mvmnt

Yeah but we already have teleport mechanics like Dante's trickster teleport or Bayo's lock on teleport for that type of stuff which feel completely manual. SUCC just makes everything feel less stylish by fucking with natural animation curves and so on. Who tf thinks this is stylish?
