At the Huon Show (big regional agricultural show). Just saw the despair on the face of a man who now has to find his dropped car-keys in 20 acres of paddock-parking.

Just watched Malignant - an Atomic Monster (James Wan) horror written by Akela Cooper.

This is one of those medical, body horror pieces where you think you know what is going on, only to have your assumptions upended several times in the second half. It's a good ride!

About to watch The Amityville Horror (1979) for the first time. I have no idea what to expect. All I know is the creepy house. 😬🏠

I heard there was a statue tall
That sneered at folk and commanded all
But you don't really care for symbols do ya
It goes like this the feet the fist
The head that fell the aim that missed
The long lost king whose name was Ozymandias
Ozymandias
Ozymandias
Ozymandias
Ozymaaaaandias
Once upon a desert sandy
As through winds the trav'ling man he
Spied the face of Ozymandy
Lying, simply lying there
Suddenly there was some writing
Pon the plinth that he was sighting
That the sand and time were blighting
Quoth the statue, "Now despair"
There was an old man you could gaze
At his works in despair in a daze
If you looked upon them
And were mere mortal men
'Ozymandias mighty', it says

Watched Glengarry Glen Ross last night (David Mamet play). Even now, that Always Be Closing monologue still slaps.

One Battle After Another is an absolute masterpiece. Just pipping the post for my favourite film of the year so far (still to see Bugonia and Eddington and If I Had Legs I'd Kick You).

Absolutely recommend it.

Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

Watching Cujo for the first time (I'd read the book) and really did not expect the dog to be as good as it is. That is some Saint Bernard performance!

Black Phone 2 is excellent. I liked the first one pretty well, but this one is way better. Definitely one to catch at the cinema if you can.

Excellent acting, great script, gorgeously creepy setting, and cool use of filter effects in different scenes. The soundtrack is particularly good.

I wasn't surprised that my post about not loving the Golden Age sci-fi writers got a lot of... engagement. 😅

What *did* surprise me was that when I casually mentioned that Ray Bradbury was the lone exception, a ton of great writers chimed in to echo that sentiment.

So I dug deeper into why.

1/2
why do we still like Ray Bradbury?

My first ever morels!!

I have a bucket-list of mushrooms and fungi that I always keep a lookout for in the Tasmanian wilderness.

Apparently these are rare here, but come up after a wet winter.
I was super chuffed to find two!

The Long Walk is the best film I have seen this year (which is saying something because I have watched some amazing films)

The humanity and despair and friendship bleed off the screen. I haven't cried this hard in a cinema in ages.

If any horror should be an awards contender, it is this.

I just found out that Jimmy Kimmel has actors’ union people who are just short of benefits availability on his show to deliver one line so they can get their union benefits. That’s a good guy.

First time watching Phantom Thread and so far, Daniel Day Lewis is just blowing my mind. I keep forgetting it is him, he is that much seated in this character and voice. The dialogue is just gorgeous too.

I love this shit! The uncanny nuance in every little detail bringing Gladys to life-- I didnt even clock all the prosthetics (and I was really looking)! Truly incredible work.

Second, when we say “All knowledge is contained in fandom” what I mean is that I once posted “Hey, does anybody know anything about Eastern European wars in the mid-to-late 1880s?” and three hours later had a historian go “I study the Serbo-Bulgarian war of 1885, can I help?”

My mum is a teacher so it's a whole other experience for her, watching episode 2 of Adolescence.

That show is superb. And while all of it is tense and brilliantly acted, I think the school episode was some of the most sad . Because if that's what schools are like now... those poor kids.

The thing that stuck with me most from Ari Aster's Eddington press tour was that when he was writing the movie, he made social media accounts for each character to see what their algorithms were like, and no matter how hard he tried, once the algorithm was set they could not get out of it/change it.
I'm not sure this explains everything, but I find it interesting. The Charlie Kirk described here certainly _sounds_ more like the person I read about on Facebook.

This post that a friend of my partner's shared on FB potentially explains the Kristin Chenoweth thing, and is frightening.
