My first ever morels!!

I have a bucket-list of mushrooms and fungi that I always keep a lookout for in the Tasmanian wilderness.

Apparently these are rare here, but come up after a wet winter.
I was super chuffed to find two!

A friend is in northern Queensland (Australia) and sent me photos of some of their birds.

Look at these incredible creatures!

Your Friends & Neighbors

A show that explores a universal truth: no matter how successful you are, it is always possible for the rug to be pulled out from under you in the most unexpected of ways.

"There's a world of difference between working hard and fighting for your life"

Great show!

What I love about this film is how, through clever use of background screens (to make for big objects against which the live-action could be set), real animals could be used, instead of reverting to constructed beasts.

Thus, Scott interacts with a real spider, keeping believability.

New watch for me: The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957).

Am still thinking of this movie days later and how they ever managed to get some of the shots and angles and size-differences they did. The set design is stellar. As is what it has to say about masculinity and our place in the cosmos.

One Hour Photo

This was a rewatch after a long time between drinks, and wow. Had forgotten just how accomplished this thriller is.

It is all great, with Robin Williams by equal turns heartbreaking and sinister. The framing and cinematography in particular are meticulously executed.

Some absolute scores at the reuse-shop today.

I have been wanting to check out The Incredible Shrinking Man since Stephen King discussed it in his book "Danse Macabre" (terrific book on horror craft).

And Vanishing Point has been on my list since watching Tarantino's Death Proof.

DEVIL'S REACH

A veterinarian must fight for her life when a night-call to a remote mountain cattle farm puts her at the centre of a terrifying hunt.

This interactive artwork at Dark Mofo is a whole damn mood.

The art is dozens of people kneeling and screaming into the night. An eerie backdrop to the festival. And yet so fitting.

I was fortunate enough to attend a cinema showing of "The Survivors" this week with other cast and crew.

The show (based on the Jane Harper novel) is out on Netflix, so get on it, especially if you like Australian crime dramas with wild and striking coastal scenery. It looks gorgeous.

Look at this marvelous beast I just found. It is about 1.5 inches long with the most gorgeous leaf-vein look to the wings.

Managed to hit my development deadlines last week so having today off to eat a scone the size of a building (from the gorgeous crepery at Oatlands) while I drive the four hours to Launceston to see the "Gentle Protagonist" exhibition of Michael McWilliams. Then it's four hours back.

I cannot wait for Zootopia 2.

I also can not wait for The Bad Guys 2.

Imagine if Disney and DreamWorks teamed up and brought us a third crossover installment "The Bad Guys take Zootopia" done in mixed animation stylings (ala something artsy like Into the Spiderverse). This would rock.

"There's someone in the back seat!"

Just watched Urban Legend for the first time and loved it. Knew nothing about it going in and legit thought it was going to be supernatural or prophesy stuff. I tend to be more satisfied when it's people being frightening.

Great setpieces. Very fun.

Just revisited Bladerunner (1982)

What struck me most on this rewatch was the sheer quality of the composition, cinematography and lighting here. The whole thing is luminous (even in the dark) with every framing and angle of shot thoughtfully conceived.

1984

For me, John Hurt has one of the best faces in cinema. A wounded gravitas that just holds you.

Released in 1984, the movie still holds up as one of the more socially-prescient, UK-set/UK-feeling dystopias depicted on film. I also like Brazil, V for Vendetta, and Never Let Me Go.

Australia voted today and polls have just about closed.

Make no bones about it, this is Australia's Tr*mp moment where we either stay the course or go very dark. I am praying we voted against hate and division. Wish us luck.

My count-stress snacks are Poolish Bakery and Spreyton Cider.

Today's tip-shop haul:

The Crazies (1972) - I like Romero, so pretty chuffed to find one I have not seen.

Eagle Eye - I didn't mind this neat little high concept thriller the first time I saw it.

Odd to see TG: Maverick second-hand, so a nice score.

Not bad for three bucks.

In my happy place today visiting Yayoi Kusama art at the National Gallery of Victoria. This is just a tiny taste of some 200+ artworks on display.

Fave moment was when a little boy saw the purple-and-white triptych and went "Tadpoles!" And his dad, without missing a beat went, "Yep. Tadpoles, son."

Two pretty moths I saw last night. Moths are some of my favourite insects and this green one was a first for me.

My Easter lilies are out. First time they have popped up.

They have a faintly delicate scent.
