landscape architecture and ecology, bikes and bikepacking, urbanism, little bluestem. philly transplant.
this like like saying americans prefer very large gas-powered cars. yeah they buy them in great numbers, but could there be any other factor in the choices people make?
Right, this is true, but the OVERWHELMING evidence of the past 100 years of American life is that vastly more people want space and a car than a smaller unit and a car-free lifestyle. This is mostly why the suburban share of US population has grown relentlessly for the entire 20th and 21st century
Some people put a premium on space in my experience, others put a premium on not having to have a car and not being isolated out in the suburbs

They called them Near Abroad Direct Action Operations, NADA Ops. The "joke" in the CalSec cafeterias, which made its way out later in the hearings was that "What does the operator say when asked if there are civilians in the area? Nada...oops!". Even decades later, Arizona didn't find it funny.

@congressmanboyle.bsky.social I hope you’re ready when this comes to Philly. You have a lot of immigrants and Americans who look like immigrants to ICE in your district.
A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

@congressmanboyle.bsky.social just spitballing here
I want a fucking Works Progress Administration devoted solely to auditing, investigating, and prosecuting every shitheel DOGE kid and MAGA cultist involved in gutting USAID, starving Gaza, and siccing ICE goons on our cities and towns
I’m a single-issue voter from now until the day I die: “hold the people who did this and all these other crimes responsible, no matter what it takes”

I’m gonna go to town halls and congressional field offices and bring it up ad infinitum

Horrifying— Barbara Gomes Marques went with her US citizen husband and lawyer on 9/16 to a green card appointment at USCIS office in downtown LA where she was tricked into walking down a hallway away from them, was snatched by ICE and never came back. She now faces imminent deportation in Louisiana.

because republicans have been hollering about doing this for my entire life, and democrats like this guy have either placated them or not taken them seriously
This. This administration is even worse than any of us thought possible. Who had destroy NIH, CDC, USAID, EPA, scientific research all at the same time on their bingo card?
My thesis is that no matter how doomer you were in Nov. 2024, we're probably past your worst-case scenario for the first 9 months of this administration.

It's very strange for me to realize I wasn't pessimistic enough.

philly’s bike infrastructure in a nutshell. and every 4-block stretch is a herculean effort of advocacy
What’s the point of making a cycling lane that just dead ends and forces cyclists into traffic? Cyclists and motorists are unprepared for the merge into traffic . Couldn’t make 2 more blocks of bike lane ? Why would it take up some parking? Dumb and dangerous.
Here’s the best example where 5 St SW protected cycle track was held back from even higher potential: Connecting to the Bow River Pathway System.

The two blocks between the Bow River and 3 Ave SW remain disconnected from 5 St SW Cycle Track to this day. 🤨

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

The work Landscape Architecture produces is a huge carbon source and urban parks will never sequester any significant amount of carbon if any, so we should really stop acting like they do. There’s a million better ways to address carbon.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Food systems are the #2 contributor to climate change, the #1 driver of deforestation, the #1 driver of biodiversity loss on land, and the #1 user of freshwater.

(It follows that food systems contain many solutions to these problems.)

First—if at all possible—don't go by yourself. Go in a group of friends you trust. Talk in advance about what you aim to accomplish and what each of you needs.
