Finally getting to a good place with this presentation! It's still not nearly as much data as I'd hoped to have ready by this point, but that's the way it goes! Come see me next week at #IAGLR2025!

While the Edmund Fitzgerald is the most famous, the #GreatLakes are home to an estimated 6000 - 10,000 shipwrecks. Many wrecks occur in fall due to the "November Witch" winds caused by a clash of cold Canadian air from the north + warm Gulf air from the south www.discovermagazine.com/as-an-underw...
As an Underwater Graveyard, the Great Lakes Have Claimed Close to 10,000 Ships
Though called the Great Lakes, these massive bodies of water are actually inland seas, and can be just as unpredictable as the ocean.

On this day 50 years ago, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior. I doubt I'll be able to find an appropriate beer to raise to her memory in Cali, but I will do what I can and still share the story with my Limnology students youtu.be/9vST6hVRj2A?...

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called 'gitche gumee'
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy

I'm missing the first snowfall. As someone who did fieldwork all through the 24-25 winter, I simultaneously feel like I've paid dues and this is ok to almost blasphemous. At least I can watch it on our Ring camera.

My mom is definitely milking the sympathy play from my being here. Today I have finished cleaning her room (took me 4 non-consecutive days!), mopped the kitchen, dealt with garbage/recycling day, took mom shopping, and now cooking chili and corn bread.

Decades ago, non-native carp escaped into the Illinois River, wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. Now, a proposed project that’s both expensive and contentious aims to keep the fish out of the Great Lakes. 🐟
Can A Billion-Dollar Barricade Keep Carp Out Of The Great Lakes?
A giant infrastructure project aims to block invasive carp from entering Lake Michigan, but Chicago’s polluted water already keeps them out.

It has been 60 years, to the day, since LBJ released a report to the public about pollution. I wrote about appendix Y4 of that report.

"The climatic changes that may be produced by the increased CO2 content could be deleterious from the point of view of human beings."
