The whole "why do orcs know what a menu is" thing is a non-issue

Hobbits are a metaphor for rural English nobility. It figures that orcs represent their hated enemy: the French.

The destruction of the entire East Wing really got through to a lot of normal people. And a lot of times when people started paying attention, they continue to pay attention
I know it’s dumb and not nearly as meaningful as all the genuinely horrifying things he’s done but I stand by the idea that tearing down half the White House so he could build a big gaudy ballroom was the exact moment where everything started unraveling for Trump.
New York - Net Support For:

Bombing Alleged Drug Boats: -23%
Prosecuting Official Critical Of Trump: -28%
Deploying ICE To Round Up Illegal Immigrants: -28%
Increasing Tariffs On Virtually Everyone: -33%
Demolishing the East Wing: -40%

Could argue the misogyny Summers expressed both publicly while president of Harvard and in emails to Epstein says more about the culture at our most elite institutions than any of the frontpage freakouts over academia in the past few years but hey

Agree. In practice the reason why it won't happen is what it would delegitimise is 'Labour's 2024 election campaign and subsequent strategic choices', which are increasingly IMO the tail that is wagging the dog.
I think the conventional wisdom that switching to PR, even explicitly to block Reform, would delegitimise the system is completely wrong. You would get buy-in from every other party, bar maybe the Tories, and it's historically the main reason electoral reform happens. www.jstor.org/stable/2585577

Dunno if it is just I am atypical for rarely if ever thinking about the pace or scale of illegal immigration but part of me thinks if we didn't have a government making bad policies to appeal to the Tommy Robinson's of the world people would be less inclined to go "this is a massive problem"
Asked how happy Keir Starmer is that Tommy Robinson is now backing his asylum plans, his spokesman replies that "the public can tell that the pace and scale of illegal immigration is out of control..."

"We must restore order... or we will lose public consent for giving refuge at all".

The New York Times obit for Alice Wong doesn’t mention Covid or Gaza

It ignores two of her biggest causes because of political bias

Alice fought tirelessly for Covid mitigations

She fought for the people of Gaza

She rightfully reminded us that the genocide in Gaza is a disability justice issue

Both the Budget and the asylum bill are disintegrating before they've even been formally announced.

Absolutely dead government.

also it's too clever (or stupid) by half - hardly anyone thinks Labour has stuck to its promises *because it hasn't*. Raising employers NI broke a manifesto promise! Scrapping Dilnot, while barely noticed, also broke a manifesto promise. And winter fuel was seen that way too

I like the briefing that "Morgan thinks that you shouldn't break promises to recapture trust", because the public didn't think you were promising to improve public services?

I'm sure you guys are all great at shopping like normal ppl but I wish I could remind some folks:
Take bags, or at least don't kick off at having to pay for one. That's been the law for 10 years now.
Don't fucking haggle, you're not Indiana Jones
You're not The Protagonist.
Neither's your kids.
In these busiest shopping weeks of the year, with everyone under horrible pressure over money, job security etc, try to be nice to retail staff (who likely have unreasonable sales targets from HQ to make up for a lousy retail year). Far too many stressed customers will behave appallingly right now.

I dunno if I could probably accept it, the refugee convention not having the requirement to go to a place legally is very important and two tiers of asylum seekers seems crazy. But we can have a discussion about merits (Like maybe 10 years before permanent residency for everyone + safe routes)
Could prob accept some pretty draconian small boat policies if there was a genuine safe route policy alongside it. So far we have no details at all.

Remember the recent middle-of-the-night apartment building raid where children were dragged outside naked & zip-tied in the street while black & Latino residents were _sorted by race_ and piled into separate vans while their apartments were ransacked & robbed? That raid? So it resulted in 0 arrests.

A few ways this could go:

1) They get it past parliament, it’s wildly successful and retired reactionaries go wild for red, white and blue Labour

2) They get it past parliament, retired reactionaries still hate them

3) It crashes in Parliament and they look like vicious clowns
