The UK strategy on migration is no more sophisticated than "big number bad! make number smaller!"

This would be chronically lazy even if the thing being counted were something unequivocally bad like lung cancer deaths.
Net migration has fallen again to 204,000, the lowest level since 2021 and is forecast to continue falling over the coming years.

Not that you would know it from the endless coverage of Britain's supposed "immigration crisis"

This house tax pretending is making me more insane than usual because as a renter I’ve had to move every 1-3 years just as standard because rents always rise. And no one cares. House owners get a tiny fraction of that precarity and suddenly it’s the worst thing that’s ever happened

Why is 'net migration' even the figure we talk about? If you're a racist, 100k foreigners moving here isn't made ok by 100k Brits leaving. If anything, it would make it even worse because the people you like are diluted even more.

And if you're not a racist you don't care about it anyway.
New net migration figures at 930am.

Net migration fell half a million to 344,000 in 2024 from 848k in 2023

56% of people think it went up last year
17% think stayed the same
14% think it went down

2025 figure to be lower again
16% expect that
38% think it will be up
31% about the same

Why does Headline English so often use the construction "[cause] as [effect]", e.g. "Heatwave continues as four reported dead"?

I don't think anyone would ever say that in natural usage, but the reverse - "Four reported dead as heatwave continues" - seems way more natural.

Ughh it should be illegal to a) release TV series all spread out and b) recommend a series to me without warning me it's all spread out so I can wait and watch it all at once, the way god intended.

So this happened in Oslo yesterday. Four articulated buses got stuck in a roundabout.

You know for a fact they're only doing this because juries are routinely finding anti-genocide and climate change protestors innocent.
Bit of a test case here for “is liberalism still a real thing, or is it just a political version of a collection of Labubus that you show off to your friends” IMO.

Some good news amongst the deluge of daily horrors
BREAKING: This is huge news, the EU's equivalent of the 🇺🇸Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.

🇪🇺Court of Justice just ruled all 🇪🇺countries must recognise same-sex marriages granted in other member states.

This effectively legalises gay marriage across 🇪🇺

I was cycling to work this morning, thinking about how shit it is losing my job for being depressed and being asked to sign an NDA saying I can't tell my colleagues that's why I'm leaving, and I happened to glance up and notice this sign which I must have passed hundreds of times without seeing.

Our respectable media outlets are run by outright fascists and it's going to take physical violence to recover from this situation.
