New followers! Hello! This is my personal account, where I retweet elected official stuff for ~*reach*~ but also post cat pictures and repost things like DS9 and Tom Holland’s “Umbrella.” If you’re just here for the politics, @sarahbw.bsky.social is your best bet. Either way, I’m happy to have you.
Hello, new followers! I was elected in 2022 to the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee in Maryland. We are not government officials, but we are on the primary ballot every four years and elected by the 400,000 Democrats in our county to lead the local party.
@zachbrand-wiita.bsky.social and I are up to season 3 in our Person of Interest rewatch. It hits different after the tech industry very publicly spent years and untold billions trying to create the Machine and instead gave us sycophantic autocorrect, but it's still an incredible show.

This is the kind of thing I think about when someone complains that universal basic income would make people dependent on the government for survival. You instead want to depend on Tyson Foods for your survival? Do you get to vote on what corporations do??

I don't know Bill Ferguson -- but he is not a lawyer. I do not know a single experienced redistricting or voting rights lawyer who agrees with him. If Ferguson doesn't want to redraw the map, he should just own it. Don't make up dumb legal arguments.
In an interview with @lauren-egan.bsky.social, Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson explains his caution over redrawing the congressional maps in his state:

NEW: a contractor is paying random people $300 to physically track immigrants for ICE. They're given addresses, vehicles, told to monitor the target. That information then goes back up to ICE. These are not licensed private investigators; members of the public

Part of the reason this story is included is to reinforce a command the writers would have known well: "Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt."
Since we are about to enter the Christmas season, here's a picture of Joseph and Mary with baby Jesus fleeing to Egypt to avoid persecution. Immigrants.

You can really understand a lot of the outrage and contempt from the press at Democrats seriously trying to contest the GOP in redistricting and legislative brinkmanship as the equivalent of those 19th century anti-suffragist cartoons attacking women for pretending to be men.

Back in the day I transcribed an old Barth speech that isn't anywhere on the English Internet, I think, and my old site is gone, but it's still on the Wayback Machine. One of my fav speeches ever, changed my life. web.archive.org/web/20210121...
Am reminded of a 1911 lecture by Karl Barth, “Jesus Christ and the Movement for Social Justice”.

“When I talk about the movement for social justice, I am not talking about what some or all Social Democrats are *doing*; I am talking about what they *want*.”

And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.
