Now that people are here: I'm a Trekkie, Whovian, book nerd, knitter/crocheter, sewist, occasional gardener, frequent baker, and undiagnosed but pretty sure there's some ADHD at the VERY least (I have more interests and minor hobbies than I've listed).

Every so often I'm like "jfc I feel like I have been so scatter-brained all this year, why can't I focus on things, why am I always behind at work" and then it's like...

Oh. Right.
One of our country's greatest war criminals just died, the president is arguing with himself about whether or not to let 40 million people starve, and there is an actual courtroom drama about a five dollar footlong.

How are any of us supposed to maintain emotional regulation.

Happy Halloween! This is my favorite holiday and I'm so proud of this #handmade costume that I'm cropping it down and sharing.

I made adjustments to an existing #sewing pattern for the base and then designed the image on it myself by hand! It's possibly the thing I've made that I'm most proud of.

Murderbot.
It's Murderbot.

The number of times I've gone through the series, I've literally lost count.
There's nothing in this world quite like that one fictional character you're obsessed with holding your mental health together like glue holding together a shattered vase

Not that anybody following me needs to hear this thread (which is good).

But I am old enough to have it found out as an adult *that* Mr Rogers sharing a pool with a Black man was a big deal, let alone WHY.

IMO, not understanding that the people who did this are still ALIVE and VOTING is a problem.
THEY CLOSED PUBLIC POOLS RATHER THAN SWIM WITH BLACK PEOPLE

YOU ARE DEALING WITH THE SAME GROUP OF PEOPLE AS THE FOLKS WHO DID THIS

PLEASE WAKE THE FUCK UP

reposting with alt text because this feels incredibly significant. the right-wing disinfo machine means a lot of the people grieving Charlie Kirk never heard any of the things he said that would have tarnished his brand as Guy Who Just Wants to Have Dialogue Across the Aisle

So, look, I bake, sew, knit, and have a kid. There's nothing wrong with actually wanting tradwife-adjacent life stuff in general.

BUT THAT'S NEVER WHO BATEL WAS. I don't strive to become a captain in star fleet. She had drive and ambition in a way that makes no sense for her to be... "Wifey".
I've long criticised SNW for having nothing new to add to Star Trek, but that's probably unfair, because right wing propaganda is indeed new territory for the franchise. Which I guess brings me to the tradwife business.

I know they're looking up being kids into the Trek Fandom and I just have to ask...
Have they considered just making GOOD shows for a family audience?

(Disco especially isn't family friendly in s1.)
I watched Trek because my parents did.

I remember someone saying that's how you know AI can never truly be a writer. If you tell AI to stop using em dashes, it'll stop. If you tell a writer to stop using em dashes they'll tell you to fuck yourself and that you can pry them from their cold, dead fingers.

Oh yes I will be writing an essay about how the SNW episode “Four and a Half Vulcans” is wildly offensive and normalizing race science that was mainstream and popular in United States in the 1850s

Like Disco called this shit terrorism

What the fuck is this regressive bullshit

I feel I have to ask this: There's so much "SNW was great in s1, what happened?" talk but... Has anybody gone back and watched that season again?
Were we all wearing rose colored glasses? Are we now? Have those episodes held up?

(I know that’s actually not a permanent solution and pretending bad things aren’t happening is not a great survival strategy in the long run, but there was nothing I could do about it now.)

Went does SNW - the show, not necessarily the characters in it - hate Vulcans?

TOS showed a lot of characters who disliked Vulcans or failed to understand their hidden emotions. BUT the show ITSELF liked Vulcans.

Voyager, again, you have characters who can't quite grasp Tuvok, but that's personal.

I don’t need a self driving car. I need a vehicle that runs between major areas and can transport large numbers of people at once to reduce environmental impact…wait it’s a train. I’m describing trains.
Build more goddamned TRAINS, America.

It finally occurred to me: SNW has a problem as a Trek in part because it's not horny.

It's OBSESSED with monogamous relationships, but they're so vanilla.

And Disco wasn't particularly horny either, but they dealt with the mirror universe a lot and that's extremely horny.

Even LD had some! But

I think it's also worth considering that birth is also the first time MANY people have a prolonged encounter with the medical system as a whole.

The level of medical misogyny, racism, and dehumanization with a yearly checkup is minimal (and not potentially deadly) for most people.

So: birth trauma
Perhaps if we'd paid some attention to that sort of fascist/eugenic recruitment of birth-traumatized women and given it anywhere near as much attention as we gave Radicalized White Dudes Sad About Their Mediocrity, we'd be in a better place understanding how MAHA came about.

Pregnancy and childbirth are dramatically radicalizing experiences for a lot of women, who often find themselves discarded, condescended to, and hurt at a moment of profound vulnerability. For some women,’the experience makes them feminists. For others, it makes them paranoid, eugenicist quacks.

People love to talk about how little they spent on their wedding and I just want to take a moment to add that it's actually okay to spend more if you want to.
I would have pretty much been fine with city hall/elopement style, but my spouse wanted something more traditional.
We compromised.
i'm still subscribed to the wedding planning reddit even though I got married 2.5 years ago and the psychological torment some of these people are putting themselves through is insane

Exactly this.

Please think about how many people will die in a civil war. If we have the same proportion of casualties as last time, we are looking at around ten million deaths.

And I think it'll be worse.
People are so excited that we might be on the verge of civil war. I’m not. I’m a basic bitch who likes basic things like pumpkin spice lattes and not getting shot at in the grocery store.

So like, this is in response to a statement from Sam Altman in an interview about Ai that is like... published by a legit outlet. (in qt)

And yet my main takeaway from it is that he's not even a proper scifi nerd because he knows about the words "Dyson sphere" but has no concept of the reality.
Let's be generous, here, and assume that by the solar system Altman wants to put the sphere outside the orbit of Neptune, and we'll just exclude the kuiper belt entirely.

That would be a sphere with a diameter of 6 billion miles.

Let's assume that it has the thickness of an eggshell: .3mm thick.
The people dominating our political landscape, culture, and economy are just so stupid and full of shit it's almost impossible to describe
