Authors, Beware! There's a firm called "ClaimsHero" doing aggressive social media outreach claiming to
"help" you file to get $ in the Anthropic class action. In fact, it's a bait-and-switch, they are luring authors to sign up with them, then OPTING THEM OUT of the class action so they'll get zilch.

Right UK folks - @justinleeanderson.com and I want to build communities we want to see in the world. We've created a discord whose purpose is to share news with one another, look at who to write to, when to get out and act etc. If you want in, DM me or Justin and we'll sling you an invite

1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

As someone who has previously been a starving writer treated like a disposable tool, this is both hilarious and hitting very close to home.

If you're an academic talking to a non-academic audience, the goodwill you build by either not using jargon, or explaining any jargon you do use, is incalculable.

Correct use of jargon is about gatekeeping. But you're not here to show your credentials, you're here to engage with other people.

I don't use generative AI because as a writer of fiction, it offers me nothing useful creatively and nothing trustworthy when I do research. It's not worth the environmental impact. That it's been created by stealing my work and using it in breach of copyright law is a further but separate issue.
Hands up if you've never used Chat GPT ✋

(I feel like Dozer and Tank in The Matrix right now - at first I didn't use it because, rather ironically, I'm lazy and stubborn (peak Taurus energy there) - literally no, don't make me use the new thing I don't wanna. Now I'm glad I didn't 😅)
Probably a good way to tell right now if the job you’re applying for is run by absolute dumbfucks is to ask if they’re using AI.

Why does AI write like a high school student desperately trying to make their word count?

Today's a pain day, so success looks like managing a shower and arranging a plant hand-off (thanks to kind people).

Now to make sure I'm hydrated and rested enough for good recovery.

Even machinery needs repair and maintennance, folks.

And that's how we got governments led by the Bullingdon Club
If you don't pay a proper salary for public office, the only people you get occupying public office are the already rich who are there to ensure they stay that way and you never get there
people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up

Really exciting book news out of Norway. And while the article focusses on the sealskin binding, I'm even more excited by the fact that these neumes are not square, which suggests a date well before 1200.

Going to use this to describe the writing projects I have abandoned

This is happening to authors in our writing group too.
Yep, I'm getting several a day now, including ones for anthologies I'm in (and therefore have no control over their marketing) and even books I didn't write. I got one today addressed to "George".
The AI generated scam emails from nonexistent book groups (that try to extract some sort of fee) and phony book marketing/promotion ‘experts’, both trying to scam vulnerable authors, are out of control. The sheer number I receive daily is nuts.
AI generation makes them un-filterable.

Labour hate the SNP so badly that here in Edinburgh they're already in coalition with the Tories to block the SNP from running the city council (they're the largest party by far, but not *quite* a majority).

A Labour/Reform coalition is absolutely possible. Starmer is a Tory in all but name.

your intermittent reminder that the left/right axis is a spatial metaphor, not a reality, that the "centre" is not in fact a moderate middle ground but rather the *centre of power & privilege* protected by the vulgarly overt antisocialists operating on behalf of the polite paternalist antisocialists
