"Is there technology the left is excited about?" is the kind of question you only ask if you're wildly naive about technology.

mRNA vaccines. Heat pumps. Offshore wind. Urban mining. Sodium batteries.

But god forbid we're not fawning over every new implementation of Making Computers Bad At Math.

Once again I'm pointing out that technology isn't just the latest development in chipsets. In addition to high technology (computers, etc), there's also low tech (sign language, etc), mid tech (skateboards, etc) and a bunch of others. Yes, hacks are tech. Stop being narrow-minded and innovate.
“Is there a technology the left is excited about?”

High-speed rail! MRNA vaccines! New cancer treatments! Solar and wind energy collection! Better and longer-range EVs! That wood that's harder than steel! New apples! Fibermaxxing! Buldak Swicy ramen! Muppets! Muppets are too a technology, shut up!

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.
I’m constantly astounded at the sheer level of artistic production coming out of Iceland. Novels, movies, music. Amazing.

I want every single one of you who is an artist to find success and happiness making it, and I want every one of who loves to consume art to be swimming in an absolute sea of genius. Every attempt to shortcut that muddies those waters and robs real artists of success. That's my anti-AI stance.

How dumplings spread around the world

(tl;dr: It was largely, though not exclusively, the Mongol invasions!)

This. I forget names of friends all the time, so some faceless debate-me isn't really going to land.
This is the thing I think trolls, etc don't understand: Once I block you I literally never think about you again. Shit, five minutes after I block someone I don't remember who they are or why I blocked them. They simply and literally don't exist for me anymore. If this is a victory for you, fine.
Some of y’all must have a blocking kink. It’s weird — you’re intentionally rude, obstinate or worse — in my replies as it daring me to block you as it gains you something. I won’t remember two minutes from now.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

‘Policing is in crisis. The model is broken’

I talk to the Scottish Police Federation chief about the need for reform: from bringing back ‘bobbies in the beat’ and calls for more access to firearms, to the violence officers face and the epidemic of PTSD in the ranks

'Every single police officer in Scotland will suffer post-traumatic stress disorder'
The Scottish Police Federation is demanding wholesale reform of policing as the Holyrood election approaches. Our Writer at Large speaks exclusively…

Gone back to the Control Resonant trailers again and... nope, still no interest in playing as the Board's incel weapon of choice. It's arguably easter egg consistent -- but for everyone who's not seen that, unless it's a coma fantasy, it's a confusingly huge leap forward.

An accessibility note for Book Folks:

A phrase all in caps is really difficult for some people to read. However, the standard is to put book titles all in caps to attract attention. Not helpful!

If you're posting on Bluesky, why not try including the title a second time in mixed case somewhere?

I'm pretty much running full tilt at this year while life-changing family/friend events are happening all around me.

I'm trying to stash coping mechanisms as I go along, but getting out of your workspace and/or routine and focussing elsewhere for a limited period is always worth a go.
