It's like if Anne Frank's parents went out to raise awareness of the dangers of letting your child write too much in their diary.
This is what kills me. If Esther Ghey wants to talk about the dangers of kids being online too much, she can talk about radicalization, about bigotry, about the dehumanizing ideas of trans people Brianna's killers were exposed to.

She doesn't, she talks exclusively about Brianna's social media use.
putting her phone in a pouch would have made her killers less transphobic and violent?

Earlier I saw someone someone whose Grindr bio said “into finance”, which I think might be “my job is beach” for rich kids.

I’m sorry, but There Is A Circulatory System Walking Through The Kitchen Day is a modern invention pushed by card companies. I only observe A Partially Muscled Skeleton Stands By The Perimeter Fence And Screams For Thirty Seconds Before Vanishing Day on the 14th.

As an adult not much is stopping you from eating a cartoonishly large wheel of cheese in the manner of a candy bar. You could be carrying around a 50lb wheel of cheese to nibble on all day long, but you have made the choice not to.

Oh shit.
The true metric by which you can judge English social class is "some of that nice ham".

If you go to make lunch and someone says, "ooh, there's some of that nice ham in the fridge", you're middle-class.

Midnight on the Firing Line...

Digging into an old Win 3.1 Babylon 5 Entertainment Pack of sounds, wallpapers, and video clips.

It's an immensely special show to me, the first sci-fi series I followed religiously. Even more so now since mine and Kit's first walkthrough together years ago.

Pissaladière — Louche Gastronomique
I’m reading Joanne Harris' Vianne at the moment. On p20 or so, a young Vianne Rocher savours a slice of pissaladière in nineties Marseilles, reminding me that it exists and is delicious. Specifical...

A bit long term, but my favourite version of "how poor the past was" is in this chart.

Working hours go up (peaking at a 66 hour week), real wages go right.

LinkedIn is grimly fascinating. We’re hiring so I’m spending some time there, and it’s just a ceaseless wall of things nobody in their right mind would want to read, written by people an algorithm is suggesting based on me “following” people I have no memory of meeting.

A reminder that this anti-trans panic is 100% bullshit and exactly none of our country’s problems are related to someone expressing their gender identity and everyone who isn’t a hate-filled weirdo knows it.

Has the (pandemic era?) Teams/Slack/Zoom hop-on-a-call industrial complex killed detail in meeting invites across the wider workforce or am I just dealing with some very forgetful people?

Reading food history is amazing for this. Everything before about 1970 has these little footnotes about how unless you were a literal fucking monarch, your diet was anything from 30-90% shit fished out of a hedgerow and boiled in a boot.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

Out and about in town, and seeing some acute cases of Premature Decoration.

We need a festival between Halloween and Christmas so stores have something else to merchandise around. I'd suggest they just knock it the fuck off, but: a) capitalism, and b) it would be nice to have an autumn bank holiday

Funko admits “substantial doubt” it can continue as a going concern amid crashing sales and mounting debt.

The Pop! maker warns of potential loan defaults without fresh funding or a buyout, after a 14% sales drop and $250M in obligations.

The paywall is a glorious excuse for not having read the article, but I find the headline quiet hopeful - I would have thought way more than 7% of people would be brutally unwilling to work on themselves.
It is possible that the relationship recession will not correct itself. A striking 7% of singletons say they would consider a robo-romance with an AI companion.

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.
