Poor Stegosaurus 🌺
1. The Bolsheviks had overthrown a democratic government, not the Czar
2. The 75 in French 75 is the field gun caliber, not the year
3. Electric cars appeared long before the petrol ones
4. Stegosauruses never saw flowers
5. In the first 90% of human history there was next to no tech/social progress
Here’s a fun top five: things that are consensus among historians but are essentially unknown by the public. Richard I, a bad king of England. Roman Empire, fell in 1453. Paul, more important than Jesus. Witch burning, a modern phenomenon not a medieval one. Britain last invaded in 1688. Yours?

... This evening, in the flat

"Keir darling, shall we have mash or roasties with tonight's tea?"

"Every minute that we're not talking about the cost of living is a wasted minute"
this must be the most banal political soundbite of recent years, via Sir Keir Starmer:

“Every minute that we’re not talking about the cost of living is a wasted minute.”

Marie's determined posting through it is probably my favourite thing about today, exemplary public service
in a countryside gastropub and having potted shrimp and cauliflower cheese for dinner, which I'm pleased with as a combo but doesn't half feel like a Brit turning up to a French restaurant and getting the boeuf bourguignon with a side of tartiflette

This thread is excellent but I'm also stuck on how unprofessional Ovendon is being here. I would never, ever hire someone who publicly slagged off their old team mere months after leaving, especially not if they were forced to resign for sending sexist/racist messages in the work chat!
Just like the Tories, Labour's centrist hacks think themselves omniscient and infallible - they cannot fail, they can only be failed. So when they do fail, they blame everyone else.

We saw it with the Tories, and it's already started from the Starmerites with this idiotic dreck: archive.ph/rHoXA

Interesting how the secret traitor twist is making the traitors lose their minds - in reality it adds an element of randomness to their decision-making so could strengthen their position if they play it right, but them getting angry and obsessive over it will lead to mistakes #TheTraitors

My four year old is scared of dogs and most people are great at keeping their dog back from the clearly terrified child but a meaningful number of people seem to think that what she needs is uncontrolled exposure therapy and it's their job to provide it
Think one of the next big fronts in the culture wars will be between dog owners and people who really dislike dogs

It's like being stuck in a conversation with someone

(i) who *hates* Jeremy Corbyn
(ii) and *hates* New Labour

and just watching them ricochet around attempting to reverse engineer a platform, manifesto and electorate consistent with that.

I made the Nigella crack biscuits and they are, as you all said, like crack. Starting the year the way I hope to continue it: on the sofa in a biscuit and cheese-inducded coma
Parmesan shortbreads are the perfect accompaniment to any festive fizz you may be uncorking to celebrate the New Year. They’re #RecipeOfTheDay now in case you want a get a head start on them, but they’re neither difficult nor time-consuming to make. www.nigella.com/recipes/parm...
Parmesan Shortbreads
This is an Italian-inspired recipe that comes to me from Australia via Brazil. To explain: a Brazilian friend, and the best cook I know, Helio Fenerich made it for me, and I had to keep (rudely) askin...

This thread is really good. I think I'd add that anger comes a bit from the expectations-reality gap. This govt set the expectation that they could fix things and it turns out they can't, because they mostly don't have a plan and tied their own hands with the tax pledge...
I had a long thread written out but the app closed and it's deleted so here are some mostly-formed thoughts: it's a mixture of their central problem (lack of a clear mission), unforced errors (WFA) and a failure to recognise the information environment they're operating in
Glad the FT is asking the question. Even if I’m not convinced they found a compelling answer.
I get that Starmer & Reeves are unpopular, I really don’t understand the extent of the dislike.

Feel free to bookmark this and hit me with it later. But a few more summers like the one we just had and I wouldn't be surprised if this starts to turn around a bit. You couldn't pay me to go to Spain in August in a heatwave but I bet the sea in Skeggy was great.
Funnily enough though where I’ve always felt the sense of devastation worst in the UK is in former seaside resorts.

Stood next to Mitchell and Webb while waiting to order at a pub bar. They both had beers. I too had a beer.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

A friend of mine had a superpower: she used to work in the bar at the local lodge. So she knew which councillors and which local bigwigs were members. And, well. It was a lot.
Can someone explain why the London police (“coppers”) and the Masons (???) are fighting? And also what century it is over there?

No matter how abhorrent someone’s tweets, or views, the idea REMOVING THEIR CITIZENSHIP should be the response is deranged.

Following the King's address, the combined choir of "Songs for Ukraine" and the Royal Opera House Choir performed the English version of the Ukrainian song "Shchedryk," known as "Carol of the Bells."

Best dinner: Davey
Most likely to start an argument: Kemi
Most generous gift: big Ange
Stingiest gift: Johnson
🎄Got a spare seat at the Xmas Dinner table? Well if you're looking for a politician to invite (why wouldn't you be) Then Brits say:
Boris would be the most fun
Fancy an argument go for Farage
Kemi makes the best xmas dinner (no sandwiches)
Keir would bring the most stingy gift
