The New York Times reports that the Department of Homeland Security has sent Google, Meta, and other media corporations subpoenas for the names on accounts that criticize ICE enforcement. The department wants to identify Americans who oppose what it’s doing. I’ll save them time.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Maybe just for once, we could give the benefit of the doubt to the Cassandras who have been right about everything, rather than the Nazis gaslighters who complained about being called Nazis, while throwing Nazi salutes in public, posting Nazi propaganda, wearing Nazi regalia…
it's absolutely crucial that we do not get ahead of ourselves . the correct time to call a concentration camp a concentration camp is 20 years from now when you exhume the mass graves.
Can’t believe we are still doing this

It's unchartered, but we can see the terrain: the territory ahead includes masked secret police taking people to concentration camps but not new vaccines. That's our reward for a system in which fewer than 20 people, all of them deranged and malicious, control over $3 trillion.
The pace at which US wealth concentration is rising is simply staggering

The concentration of AI wealth into the hands of a few tech barons + plutocratic capture ==> unchartered territory

CCTV footage appears to show DHS agents posing as people having car trouble in order to lure a target out of his house before arresting them. The target comes out and starts helping them before 3 vehicles surround the scene. The car "experiencing" trouble then drives off with them.

Started my seeds today. This is a compromise between what the Almanac says is suitable, & what I can psychologically handle when the nighttime temps were still in the 20s last week.

As a Yankee, I don't think I will ever get used to the idea that Spring is only really 2.5 weeks long in Georgia.

Remember how pundits said 2024 meant Dems must become restrictionist to win back working class? I challenge that here:

🚨ICE just got access to one of its biggest private detention center operators last night, thanks to a Navy contract.

The move lets ICE bypass normal contracting processes to tap GEO Group to operate its detention centers as they race to buy detention sites to house 92,000 detainees nationwide.

In other words, the vast majority of the $45 billion in reconciliation funding is going to go to the new system of warehouse detention camps.

The other $6.8 billion will presumably serve mainly to keep the existing system of detention running without any other major changes.

Someone else's "lost my cat in my own house" post reminded me of the PANIC we went through when our own cat magically disappeared on the day we were scheduled to MOVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. Everything except what we were taking on the airplane was packed in a moving truck. The house was EMPTY.

The current administration's priorities are quite clear: jail brown people (many of whom prove to be legally in the U.S.) + leave more Americans without healthcare.

But if you read the Times' journalism, the idea that corruption is directly and documentably responsible for most U.S. dysfunction (health care, climate, guns, enshittification), is largely absent.

Usually the dysfunction is blamed on ambiguous, causation-free "partisan animus" and "tribalism"
I'm still SHOCKED by the obscene rise in billionaire election spending since Citizens United in the NYT piece, despite already knowing that election corruption w/ $ was profound. (Recall that BCRA fought dangerous campaign $ in *2002*)

The article data didn't have a graph, so I made one to show it.
