🤔
If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

Incredibly emotional to hear my poem has been turned into a song of resistance and is being sung in Minneapolis right now. Please do not give up.

I adore Vivaldi.
Also switched to Proton for most email.
Did not renew my Windows subs.
Got rid of Alexa, Ring, and Google home products. Hubby is building our own system with Ubiquiti.
Switched to Deezer for music.
No regular streaming subs, except Crunchyroll.

Every time you open Vivaldi, you're basically giving #BigTech the finger. It's the little things.

Digital audiobooks of many of the most in-demand titles are often priced over $100, and need to be re-purchased after so many uses or 1-2 years.
We're willing to pay for good content, but it's just hell on our budgets.
#librarylife
No surprise to librarians, but perhaps surprising to users, demands/prices for ebooks /audiobooks are killing public library budgets. David Szalay's book, Flesh,” costs DCPL:
$28.99 hardcopy
$59.99 ebook
$69.99 audiobook
DCPL owns hardcopy; rents & must repurchase ebook & audio book every 2 yrs.
Libraries can't afford e-books. D.C. lawmakers have a plan.
The demand and price for e-books is up — and it’s busting the D.C. Public Library budget.

We canceled our planned family visit this weekend because of these evil bastards.
🧵From St. Paul, MN.

The last few nights have been different. ICE kidnappings seemed like a daytime event until this week, but now ICE is active after sundown. The shooting of a civilian by ICE in North Minneapolis is also a grim sign for anyone who lives here.

People not in Minnesota: please read this excellent summary of what life is like in Minneapolis since the murderous scum ICE swarmed here. And more are on their way. By local reporter / writer / bike dude / legend @dbrauer.net .

This bobtail squid burrowing into the sand is already adorable, but please watch till the very end!

It sticks out its little arms and earnestly sprinkles sand over itself 🦑𓂃◌𓈒𓐍

MN born and bred. Made stupid mistake when hubby retired from the Navy (thank God!) and ended up living on the wrong side of the damn river, though I do WORK on the MN side (also, thank God!)
And honestly, I think in general this attack on my city shows a total lack of understanding the basic character of Minnesotans, underestimating our tenacity, stubbornness, resilience, communality, and absolute willingness to volunteer for shit and show up. The revolution has a Sign-Up Genius.
I'm at a coffee shop at the moment with a bunch of writer buds, and we just observed a large convoy of ICE vehicles pursued by a much larger convoy of volunteer observers honking their horns with wild abandon. If there's one thing Minnesotans do, it's show up for shit.

Books don't tell readers who they personally are or who they are supposed to be. They do show readers a variety of characters. Implicit in that is this: "Here are some ways of being." Kids books aren't altering your kid to be someone new. They are simply showing them parts of humanity.

Great thread. YLE always has great analogies.
#healthcare
5/ The U.S. health system is more like off-road trails in Utah. It’s fragmented, uneven, expensive, and wildly variable. Access depends on insurance, geography, clinic capacity, and state policy. This needs a 4-Runner built to handle potholes, steep drop-offs, and unpredictable conditions.

One of the reasons why I always look to see if I can purchase items directly from a small business rather than through Amazon or Target.
Found great cotton one piece pjs for our kids via a search that led to Target (ah, algorithms). Looked up the company and bought from them directly instead.
I just found out that our stuff is being sold on Amazon - WITHOUT our consent or any ability to opt out bc Amazon is just scraping artist’s websites and putting our shit in their search results. Again, without our permission.

Every month I pick a theme of something to try to make each day to learn. Two months ago it was data visualization, using examples I admire, in order to tell stories about numbers that matter.

This is my minimalist homage to Poppy Field, to which it owes everything, and I’ll link it below.
