it’s almost like most terminally online leftists aren’t committed to actually building the structures necessary for a socialist society to work because they’re instead actually libertarians who say “Give me, give me, chicken tendies; Be they crispy, or from Wendy's”
stancil said anti-spreadsheet communism leads to replicating non-progressive individual charity in the form of mutual aid, and that folk who go all in on this cannot functionally develop societal aid structures that don't involve passing around the same money until it all gets eaten by gofundme fees

Just gonna say this again for games sphere cus we get the same question:

Networking doesn't mean schmoozing up to famous people, it means making friends with your peers. Then in 10 years, 20, one of you might be famous? And sure you're still helping each other cus well yeah friends.

Make. Friends.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

White men are 36% of the population but 80% of the outrageously whiny mediocrities who think they deserve more without any effort (the other 20% are white women)
Fact | You can't write something predicated in the utterly ludicrous assumption that white men are being excluded from publishing unless you are racist.

Leftists have memed themselves into "communism is good but spreadsheets are scary" as a position so they're reduced to small-scale communitarianism that involves just passing money back and forth until GoFundMe transaction fees eat 100% of it
Guys I know you’re all going to yell at me here but mutual aid is not meaningfully distinct from the kind of privatized community charity system where poor people go to the church and hope someone has donated a hot meal. It’s not progressive, it’s not effective, it’s not good service provision.
"poor enough to need mutual aid"

Everyone needs mutual aid.

Biden was the most progressive president in modern history, and it's time we say it. We can and should demand better, but better doesn't happen if, every time the needle is moved towards the progressive end of the spectrum, y'all claim everything is actually getting more conservative/worse.

A nontrivial percentage of the American electorate cares more about social hierarchy and dominating outgroups than overall economic wellbeing.
Unless the Democrats recover at least some of their identity as a working-class party, the Republicans will own that demo by default.

Good interview in the paper, this. I think Sadiq is right: London 'needs' to be less successful than it is for a bunch of political arguments here in the UK to work, hence the fictions being invented about it:
Populists attack London because it is ‘progressive and successful’, says Sadiq Khan
Rightwing attacks on one of the world’s most visited cities at odds with reality, says mayor

The type of guys who fetishize warfare, and frequently proclaim their masculine toughness, have a long history of losing to the seemingly “weak” people who don’t want to fight but get pushed too far.

Because bluster isn’t actually strength.

Scared nerds are stronger than they think.

Good thread.
every time I can recall from history that a group has centered a culture of martial virtue to the point of conflict,

the "soft intellectuals" the warriors distinguish themselves from have learned war real quick, dominate because they pay attention to details, and then go back to art and nerdy stuff

This thread perfectly explains why AI has little value for qualitative research.

Yes, large language models can find patterns in qualitative data. But, they're trained on what we already know. So, they won't find anything surprising. And, surprise is qualitative research's primary value-add.
Absolutely right.

AI might be able to summarize (poorly) what we currently know, but a major goal of historical research is to find the hidden surprises out there.

Let me illustrate …
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

Nat King Cole releases his 4th and most-famous recording of “The Christmas Song” today in 1961.

Years earlier, songwriters Mel Tormé and Bob Wells had taken it to Nat King Cole’s house.

“Play that again,” Cole said.

They did, but before they finished, Cole said, “Stop everything. That's my song.”

A great idea is RE-GIFTING

If you have gently used items you don't use anymore wrap them up and drop them off at a shelter or to local underserved communities! Books, appliances, clothes, toys, accessories, etc!
If you are not feeling the spirit of Christmas THEN GO MAKE SOME

Volunteer, donate, help, contribute, be kind, be nice to people having a hard time, be patient if it's lacking, BREATHE

if our leaders are failing us then make your own magic

I gave gifts to the less fortunate & it made my Christmas
