From the outside it might look like ICE officers wear masks to avoid accountability, but in reality they are a way to avoid accountability.

The Latest Defense Against ICE: 3D-Printed Whistles
Chicagoans are making, sharing, and printing designs for whistles that can warn people when ICE is in the area. The goal is to “prevent as many people from being kidnapped as possible.”

11) The discussion about health care was useful PR, but covered up discussion over the power of the purse, which is fundamental. If the WH doesn't have to follow the law, it doesn't matter what you pass.

With the remaining approps bills + CR, Dems still could fight that fight. If they're smart

NEW: Dems easily flipped the sheriff's office in Pennsylvania's Bucks County, a big swing county in the Philly suburbs.

So? The incumbent GOP sheriff had contracted with ICE. His Dem challenger promised to end the contract.

Now he wants other swing-state Dems to look at his victory as a lesson:
Voters Ousted This Pennsylvania Sheriff After He Signed Up to Collaborate With ICE - Bolts
A populous, swing county replaced its GOP sheriff on Tuesday after months of controversy over his joining ICE’s 287(g) program. The Democratic winner promises he’ll end the contract.

SNAP embarrassed him. So now he's against SNAP. SNAP is now the James Comey of government assistance programs.
President Trump criticized the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during a Fox News interview tonight, saying people "get it automatically now so the number is many times what it should be, it's disgraceful."
Trump says "we can reform" SNAP
"SNAP is supposed to be if you are down and out," Trump said on Fox News this evening.

As much as YOJIMBO and SANJURO are showcases for Toshiro Mifune's charisma, they don't really work without a titan on the other side of the story, and it's hard to think of other actors who could've matched Mifune' energy the way Nakadai did.

That video above is great. But delaying the bill until Friday or Saturday would give voters time to pressure cavers like Rosen, King and Cortez Masto.

Really fighting at this point means being willing to piss off your colleagues.

Yeah this is it. Today in “neither our media nor our political system is designed to deal with a far right authoritarian party.”
I scribbled down all my shutdown-related intrusive thoughts and put them in a blog post.

“Anyone who helps me try to steal an election gets a pardon” is perhaps the most corrupt thing to happen in American history.

That “conservatives” have simply accepted this as the price of admission is the greatest moral and intellectual humiliation.
NEW: Donald Trump has pardoned a long list of allies in his bid to subvert the 2020 election including:

-Rudy Giuliani
-John Eastman
-Mark Meadows
-Sidney Powell
-Ken Chesebro
-Christina Bobb
-Kelli Ward

Hearing from more people after this went out.

"We're all pissed. This was a lot of unnecessary stress on people and their families for nothing. And if I win the lottery tonight I absolutely will spend millions to hire people to follow these 8 Dems around for a year and make their lives miserable."
I heard from a bunch of federal employees last night and this morning. They aren't happy.

"I would rather be an actual pawn. At least pawn sacrifices are calculated and achieve something. All this for a fucking meaningless vote."

As painful as it would be, all the things need to fail. We need, to borrow a concept from @smettler.bsky.social, "unsubmerge" the state, & make folks finally, a century later, realize that it is the federal government that backstops, underwrites, & guarantees all the other institutions in society.
Unfortunately, the solution is to let it continue. Trump's still at 40%. The only way, it seems, that we're going to get a durable supermajority to fully reject the malevolent, incompetent, & lawless authoritarianism is for the horrible, inhuman, awful consequences of it to become visible to all.

One point worth emphasizing here: The punditry has been saying Sherrill (and Spanberger) represent the sane centrist wing of the party versus the left. Well, okay, but here Sherrill is urging more fight. Again, the results show that anti-Trump + affordability can *unite* the party. This shows how.
This is really good to see: Miki Sherrill just put out a statement sharply criticizing the Senate Dems' pending cave in the government shutdown, ripping it as "malpractice" and a betrayal of the people who are "counting on us to fight for them." Sherrill knows what drove her victory. Wake up, Dems.

The model of holding individual senators responsible is broken here. The retirees clearly agreed to take the fall. Which is why the nos should get no credit for voting no unless they move to oust Schumer

A reasonable person would wonder why they bother doing things like this. The politically disengaged people who would be fooled by this essentially ceremonial vote will never learn that it happened at all.
This is key. The vote the Dems secured here is a fake nominal vote. Everyone knows this.

This is a bad deal for Americans.

Voters turned out in record numbers last wk to elect Democrats believing they would fight for working families.

We urge Senate Dems to vote NO on the reported GOP budget package, which fails to address the devastating health care crisis.
